A crazy-ass writer/publisher/singer/weed-dealer/etc rides out the last 6 months of probation & must change his ways when a crisis befalls his family.
Grab an opportunity by the balls and you can bring this documentary to the screen!
Total Badass takes an intimate, bold look into the life of a brazenly creative, plebeian playboy. Not satisfied with just dreaming about crazy stunts and arousing encounters, Chad Holt performs and delivers. Strap in for the wild ride!
TOTAL BADASS blazes the true Texas tale of a hilarious, crazy-ass writer/publisher/singer/weed-dealer/sex addict/Guinea pig enthusiast/dad/pirate radio host/raconteur and general man-about-town as he rides out the last six months of felony probation and subsequently must change his ways when a financial crisis befalls his estranged family.
Fascinating in its deep access to unbelievable scenes of outlandish self-expression, Total Badass reveals an unsettled soul, fettered by a felony conviction and relegated to the underground arts scene. Will a happenstance family of his own finally ground this roustabout? Does Chad just need to grow up, relinquish his aspirations and get practical?
We witness the high life taking its toll on Chad, and fatherhood throws him a lifeline.
Basically, after shooting Hell on Wheels, I grabbed my camera and shot a documentary about Austin’s most insane and hilarious Renaissance man, Chad Holt. Aside from chronicling a year-in-the-life, we follow Chad’s journey to find his artistic voice through his trash-can jumping style of music, outlandish and sexually charged writing, underground ‘zine publishing, reckless and dangerous performances and offensively hilarious humor.
To fund this odyssey (and survive in this world), Chad openly sells marijuana. Convicted of “organized crime” (he led the crew that counterfeited SXSW wristbands back in 2003), Chad whittles away the last half-year of felony probation without missing a beat. And due to the random piss-tests that accompany probation, Chad supplements his daily weed intake with cocaine (“because it leaves your system quicker”), resulting in a two-year coke habit that Chad struggles to kick. But the trip intensifies when Chad's estranged son's family succumbs to foreclosure and Chad has to move out of a rented garage and find a suitable home for raising his kid.
So we have a hilarious, tense, true-crime story that morphs into a touching family drama. It's nuts!
It’s also way off the mainstream. Total Badass explores the life of a man who doesn’t fit the mold—who refuses, and essentially can’t, conform to society’s norms. Crazy, calculating and provocative, yet vulnerable, Chad Holt defines “character” and is the ultimate outsider.
At this point, I have received no outside funding for this documentary. I am doing all I can to keep the budget as low as possible and I have a strong history of completing films with limited funds. However, the biggest logistical hurdle in filmmaking is still the cost.
Funding for this type of film is scarce to non-existent. The money-baggers of the filmmaking world show little interest in funding stories off the beaten path, particularly stories about the subculture, the underground and the weirdoes and freaks that keep life interesting.
Over the course of the past two years, we have managed to shoot and edit the film and have spent $7,293 in doing so. We have locked the picture and are now approaching the unavoidable expenses related to finishing the film. We're currently raising funds to foot the bill for the expenses necessary for preparing a film for exhibition and broadcast, including: color correction, music licensing, audio mixing, printing, shipping, promotion, master to tape and related tasks.
This is where you can help.
We’re hoping to secure a minimum of $5,000. This would cover a good deal of the aforementioned costs, albeit very bare bones. Honestly, we’d LOVE to raise around $10,000. This would allow us to finish the film properly and repay many of the expenses incurred during production and post-production. Films with a freaky subject matter, such as ours, have a much more difficult time making their money back. This has yet to deter us (see Rock Opera & Hell on Wheels, if you don’t believe me). We are determined to tell stories that engage, intrigue, entertain and explore, whether they be found in the mainstream or far from it. If we raise more than $10,000, we’d love to compensate some of the people who worked their tails off to get this film made. If we luck into more ($15k? (fingers XXXed!)), we’d be able to travel with the film as it screens across America and beyond!
Your donation can bring this film to completion. We have achieved a final cut. I have a great track record of making films that receive critical acclaim and play many fests. Finishing funds will put this picture onto the big screen for audiences worldwide to connect with and enjoy.
So we come to you, the good people, to help us complete this film for all to experience! If you can scrape up some scratch to send our way, in these hard economic times, we’d be eternally grateful.
I appreciate the opportunity to present my case to you and I hope you find this project worthwhile. Please make a donation to our film and help us finish this zany, exciting and heartwarming project.
Thank you for your time and consideration,
