A terminally ill man decides to take his life to spare the misery of his family, but finds help in the strangest of places.
Rez is confronted with a hard decision: to live out the rest of his dwindling time on earth and have his family watch his health degrade, or take matters into his own hands and spare his family the misery of his illness. In this short film exploring life, mortality, fate, love and the human condition, Rez embarks on a journey hoping to solve his personal conflicts but finds much more than what he expects. After gruesomely taking his own life, Rez is brought on a journey to fix his mistakes and make amends with those who love him.
Thank you for taking the time to read about my project. The past three months have been an extremely fun process of writing and preparing to enter production on my thesis film as part of the Film/Animation/Video Department at the Rhode Island School of Design.
While this film will be shot on traditional 16mm Black & White film, I have decided to attempt to cut the professional film lab out of the process. After dealing with unfortunate lab scratches and an overall unsatisfactory experience with the lab on my previous projects, I have decided to use a rather unconventional way of processing 16mm film: myself.
Every single frame of this project will be hand-processed in a 16mm tank, giving the ability to process 100 feet of film at a time (approximately 3 and a half minutes of footage). Below is an example of the visual aesthetic of my hand-processing.
This is where your contributions will help. A 100' roll of film costs approximately $25 to obtain, shoot and hand-process. With a "safe" shooting ratio of 10:1 (film shot:film used), I'll need to shoot 57 rolls of film to get enough footage for a 20-minute short. This puts me well over $1,000 in film costs alone. Luckily, with intensive storyboarding and rehearsals prior to production, the actual shooting ratio will hopefully be significantly lower.
After everything is shot, I will then spend hundreds of hours in the darkroom processing the film, using my processing tank and getting the hand-made, look I desire.
On top of film and processing costs, I am looking for a little more help with absorbing the costs of food, water, heat, locations, wardrobe, props, transportation, equipment rentals and, of course, cast-- all of which are extremely vital to a great shoot and positive energy on set.
After writing, producing, directing, shooting and editing three previous films at RISD, I have come to an exciting time in my student career. The past three years of schooling have lead up to this project, "R." and I would love to have your support for the journey from production to projection.
Principle shooting will occur in Southern Rhode Island, about 30 miles south of Providence. Dates are pending, but will occur in the final weeks of January or beginning of February 2012. All locations are directly off of Route 1A in North Kingstown. Anybody interested in working on production may contact Cory Zapatka at email@example.com
