Art! Candy! Women who can kick your ass!
Cory Oberndorfer is bringing his pop aesthetic to Redux Contemporary Art Center, a non-profit art space in Charleston, SC, as their 2010 artist-in-residence. During his 3-week stay Cory will create new canvas paintings, wall paintings and collages, as well as install a large-scale outdoor mural inspired by three of this favorite things (listed above). This residency allows the artist full freedom to use the space for his artistic vision and the time to focus purely on the project. The final product will be a solo exhibition in the Art Center and a mural on the façade of the building. The show, NOVELTY, will open during Charleston's Piccolo Spoleto Arts Festival.
Although Cory has previous experience with both solo exhibitions and mural painting, NOVELTY will be both his first residency and his first out-of-state solo venture. His current work is referred to as The Derby Project and features graphic images of rollergirls set against bright colors and candy. www.coryoberndorfer.com. During the residency, Cory will be drawing inspiration for new work from the www.lowcountryhighrollers.com, Charleston's flat-track derby league.
As Redux is a non-profit space, the funds for artists are limited. Additional fundraising is needed for travel, shipping of artwork, accommodations, and most importantly the expense of painting supplies(art supplies are not cheap!). Plus, Cory may want to eat a meal now and then.
