Out Of Lessons is a character drama about the first man to return from the living dead, and the post-traumatic stress he endures.
Out Of Lessons is a short film about a 31-year-old man named Allen, who wakes up quarantined and restrained in a hospital bed. He calls for help but can barely speak. His vision is blurry at best. His memory of recent events is gone and he's not sure what's happening to him. Soon though, he starts getting some answers and finds out that he is the first person to return from the living dead in a near post-apocalyptic world. The two doctors that managed to bring him back are determined to reincorporate him back into what remains of society, but once Allen starts to go through the recovery process, flashes of his memories, both in his last days as a human and as one of the undead, start to come back to haunt him. The post-traumatic stress he begins to suffer from starts to get in the way of both his own progress and the hope for humanity's future.
This is not going to be the traditional zombie film that we've all seen time and time again. We're looking to do something completely new with the genre and create a very personal and dramatic piece that's grounded in character and the consequences of their choices, which is then enhanced by a zombie apocalypse. We can't do this ambitious project, however, without your help.
All funds that are raised for the production will be used to secure real Chicago locations (primarily a hospital), secure the best equipment for the production, wardrobe, makeup, art, cast & crew, and finally for festival submissions. We're looking to shoot the film in May / June with a completion time of Fall 2012, by which time we will begin to shop it around the festival circuit.
Any amount that you can donate will be a great help to make this dramatic story about purpose and consequence a reality. If you can't afford to make a donation, that's okay, there's still a major way you can help: spread the word!
Out Of Lessons is written and directed by Coleman Ranahan, who is a senior at Columbia College of Chicago studying screenwriting. Coleman has been working on feature films and student projects for the past 2 years. You can find more information about his recent projects here.
The short film will be produced by Justin Vogt, who is a May 2011 graduate of Tribeca Flashpoint Media Arts Academy. In his time there he produced a number of short films and music videos, and he has been freelancing in media production in and around Chicago ever since. Some of his past projects can be found here.
Thank you so much for your interest and, hopefully, your donation!
