About this project
OVERVIEW | A modern riff on "string art" from the late 1960's and 70's. Modular panels made from aluminum and nylon cord attached to the wall using powerful rare-earth magnets that allow for multiple configurations that can be quickly changed. BACKGROUND | I started sketching these geometric figures after taking a technical drawing class in middle school and filled up a couple of notebooks by the time I had finished college. In 2007 I began building physical prototypes, first from wood and string and then from a number of other materials, finally settling on aluminum and nylon cord in 2009 after essentially turning my garage into a small metal shop. My first design has sold well since then (I did an initial run of 55) and, now that my process and materials are completely dialed in, I'm excited to introduce three additional designs using the money raised in this Kickstarter project.
SPECIFICATIONS | Panels measure 21" x 21" x 2", look best when mounted with exactly 1/2" of space between them, and can be displayed at either 90 or 45 degree angles relative to the floor / ceiling - see the illustration below for some typical layouts drawn to scale on a 9' wall. Primary materials are aluminum and nylon cord, and all four panel designs are interchangeable and compatible with each other. I source recycled / reclaimed aluminum when possible and, even when using new material, take care to minimize waste and build objects that should, theoretically, last forever with a minimum of care.
