T-SHIRTS /// (Chicago, Raleigh, Chicago shown - See more HERE on Flickr and each city's WYL Tee HERE) Hand-screened in Raleigh, NC with water-based inks. Royal Blue is American made 100% cotton, available in UniSex/Men's Sizing. Women's cut tees available as well. (All CITY/COLOR/SIZING information will be gathered once we reach our goal). If royal blue is not desired, we will offer the dark heather grey show above on Kate) The blue tees are American made and the grey heathers are organic cotton. SHOULDER TOTE BAGS /// (Chicago Prototype shown - See more HERE on Flickr) sturdy, custom American-made 3"x18"x16" bags with a 25" cotton webbing handle. The black bags have white ink and are 80% post-consumer recycled cotton, American manufactured and make you feel warm inside. A custom Kickstarter Badge will be incorporated onto the bag. Prints include the city name, a scale and north arrow.

PILLOWS /// (NYC Shown - See more HERE on Flickr) 18" x 18" Heavyweight, cotton-twill cloth, printed and handmade in Raleigh and Durham, NC. The front of the pillow is black with a white print and the back side of the pillow is a white cotton-twill.
HAND-STRETCHED CANVASES / EXHIBITION /// (DC & Exhibit shown - See more HERE on Flickr) Heavyweight, cotton-twill fabric hand-stretched on a 1.5" gallery-wrapped pine frame. All the cities are available as canvases and made to order. Proofs will be presented before final production is processed. All canvases will be signed and individually customized for our Kickstarter Backers and of course printed and produced in the Raleigh/Durham Triangle.
The Idea
What's your favorite place and why?
CityFabric is a new, civic-minded company, focused on creating unique ways for anyone to talk about their place. This Kickstarter project will help us expand our new "Wear You Live™" line of t-shirts and tote bags to include the cities listed above.
Why Kickstarter? And what are we doing with the 13K?
Why not! We chose Kickstarter as our platform to test our idea on a national scale. When we start to talk about having an actual inventory of 4, 6 or even 10 cities, logistics get crazy while trying to account for different sizes, colors, styles and even products. We see the crowd-ordering/crowd-funding potential of Kickstarter as a tremendously potent tool in helping us launch our line of civic-minded tees, build an inventory and give us the confidence to create a comprehensive, online platform for civic dialogue.
The Maps
The maps that we use are called figuregrounds. This type of map is commonly used in the fields of city planning, design and architecture to study density and development patterns by depicting all of the buildings in a city as opposed to the streets, parcels or transit lines. Figureground mapping is almost 250 years old and was the first time a city was technically surveyed and portrayed in the 2D, google map view that we commonly use today.
Our Story
CityFabric started in August 2010 by printing 75 t-shirts with the Raleigh figureground map on them to sell at a local arts market in downtown. The response was overwhelming so we continued to develop the idea. Over the past 10 months we have been learning about the ins and outs of starting and running a small business while crafting our brand and developing our products into civic-minded tools (and have documented it through our blog HERE). Since starting with the shirts, we have experimented with a variety of mediums that include totes, poster prints, pillows, hand stretched canvases, hand bags and curated exhibitions. In addition to our local Raleigh-Durham market, we have produced small batches of other larger market cities to test the validity of our idea.
The best part about this small business project has been the interaction with our community. This type of map is so simple that it allows anyone from elementary school students to grandparents the ability to visually tell a story about their place. This Kickstarter project is an attempt to share our civic-minded, story-telling tools with more and more people. It's our belief that the more people talk about their place, the more people will be involved in their community.

We are continually working on new cities and certainly plan to expand. Unfortunately, being such a small business, we do have certain logistical constraints that prohibit us from offering 25 cities right out of the gate. If our project hits its goal early, we are prepared to set new goals and release new cities along the way.
