Unlock: Tal System
We're already to the $3.8 million mark, so here's the 7th additional star system, Tal. Great work, pledgers, you're directly building a universe!

Tal System
Ownership: Xi'An Empire
Planets: 7
Planetary Rotation: 240 SED (Tal II), 359 SED (Tal III), 566 SED (Tal IV), 673 SED (Tal V)
Import: Raw Materials
Export: Textiles, Processed Goods, Weapons
Crime Status: Low
Black Market: Narcotics
UEE Strategic Value: Green
Tal is a system on the edge of the Xi'An Empire and one which has been generally receptive to extended human presence. The entire planetary series is what the Xi'An call a ProductionSystem: every planet has been carefully planned and patterned as a specific work zone. Each inhabited world (Tal II through V) is filled with factories, refineries, food production domes and other facilities and each planet has a specific purpose in a larger production chain.
One visually surprising element of Tal is that the Xi'An love of large scale organization means that they have actually color coded their ProductionSystem worlds: EVERY structure on Tal II is a bright yellow, Tal III purple, Tal IV dark green and Tal V a burnt orange. Humans regularly express their disbelief that such a system is even possible, although it goes a long way to explaining why Xi'An frequently have trouble adapting to the chaos of human cities.
Although the actual system is far more complex than a simple summary can provide, merchants should know that Tal II produces large scale space fabrication, Tal III food and textiles, Tal IV processes hydrogen and antimatter and Tal V is responsible for end-stage processing of weapons. The Xi'An are happy to purchase raw materials for use on their factory planets and they sell surplus production runs at fair prices. It's not the best place in the galaxy to score a deal, but dealing with the Xi'An is as close to being able to guarantee a small profit as you can find.
Next, at $3.9 million: "Located within the Banu Protectorate. A windswept mass of volcanic rock. The churning volcanoes under the surface help produce the systems main exports."

I love freelancer. Its my fave game, and the first PC game I ever bought, so I'm very excited about this project.

@ Geoff Ballington
Actually Freelancer had 72 systems and a little over 100 bases.. many of those systems were only available/reachable after you finished the storyline (Malta,Krete etc. ).
Creator Kjell-Edmund Ims on November 16, 2012
... you may want to synch up the Kickstarter project front page with the updates.. on that page (right under the stretch goals) it looks like nothing has happened since 11/12 or something.. which is totally not correct... Worried that people just checking in on the front page of the project may be turned away by the seeming lack of updates there...?

Awesome... love that if you get so drunk that you pass out and wake up the next day in a purple gutter, it will help remind you (with your horrible hangover) that your on Tal III :-)
Creator Geoff Ballington on November 16, 2012
If you ever played Freelancer, the game only had about 30 systems in it - but the variety of what was contained within them made them really fun to explore.
You'd head to the 'Colorado' system and find a very American art style to everything - the ships, planets, surfaces & interiors when docked (which didn't have too much interaction) like the bars, were all perfectly designed in unison.
Then you'd find one of the Eastern themed areas to be exactly as you'd expect - New Tokyo for example a well-lit neon metropolis, with solar-sail equipped ships formed into the shape of dragons, their names reflecting the design decisions (drake for example) - with a similar art style all the way up to the battleships you could dock within.
Gas mining planets & ocean planet environments would consist of that - a small platform in the middle of the sea or in the middle of a barren desert or ice field - it was just incredible, the amount of connection you form when that level of depth is attained in a game world - it no longer becomes a sparse universe and instead becomes a fantastic place to be, a thriving visage of life amongst the stars.
I hope this game will bring much the same to bare - we don't need to directly fly straight into planets atmospheres - docking rings will suffice - we don't even need entire cities to explore - closed environments with a view through windows to a huge metropolis and/or docking bay with ships leaving and arriving/ being loaded and unloaded below, are sufficient to give an epic feel without being disappointingly undeliverable - Deus Ex is a great example of these sort of environments - you always feel as if you are given enough to see and imagine, without being given too much.
Yeah I really like the stellar independence ideas present here - the individual coloration on planetary objects for example - it may not be present through the entire universe or solar system - because other factions/races/groups may decide to do things in an entirely different way - but it still just adds so much to the feeling provided - that this is a living, breathing and dynamic game world.

Christian Schaller: Its the Persistent Universe ,10x graphics, the many different game aspects is what makes this a much bigger deal,
Creator ProtonAx on November 16, 2012
@Christian
Just to be clear, what I am describing is an out-of-cockpit experience that Elite lacks.
Creator ProtonAx on November 16, 2012
@Christian
Star systems involve a considerably larger amount of effort on the part of artists and content creators in the Wing Commander/Privateer universe than in the Elite universe. Typically the places you can land have unique (or chosen from one of a number of templates) presentations. In the Privateer games this meant hand drawn and 3D modeled backgrounds and characters in each location. In Star Citizen the bases are going to have fully modeled 3D locations the player can explore. Some locations will have unique NPCs, unique quests and unique objects to find in space. These are in addition to the procedurally generated missions and template NPCs that appear everywhere.
The one thing Privateer lacks, however is atmospheric flight and worlds that are explorable in flight. Chris Roberts has said he would like to be able to add these later to Star Citizen, but they will not be available at launch.

Does anyone know where the 'iPad companion app' went from the 4 million extras? I was looking forward to this (love checking my stats while out and about) but it seems it was removed from the list.

@Luke: The $3.8 million includes the money collected on the RSI site as well as the KS funds.
Creator Devin on November 16, 2012
@Luke
If you check the RSI website you will see that the amount comes from the combined total of pledges from both RSI and Kickstarter.

Creator Christian Schaller on November 16, 2012
Maybe this has been covered before, but what exactly is getting unlocked here? I mean for these new star systems to add something significant to the game (and thus justifying being an unlock) I assume they do impact the game in a significant way? The reason I am asking is that I never played Wing Commander, but I did play Elite in which adding a star system would have been a trivial addition. I assume here they are more significant here?
