When I was cleaning out my locker at work, if you would’ve told me that I would one day be compiling a “greatest hits” book, I never would’ve believed you. I would’ve been too high off of making rash decisions and telling my boss that I was off to play writer to even be able to entertain such a ridiculous notion.

But years later, after the adrenaline has worn off and the luster of sleeping on floors has lost its romanticism, I find myself looking back at a catalogue of stories that has literally altered the course of my life and directly shaped the person I have become.

As a grown man who quit his job in his 30s while his friends were off starting families and on their second marriages, I packed my words of triumph and tragedy, bound them into books, stuffed them into suitcases and began a new journey of self-discovery. All while scraping by with crossed-fingers, selling reasonably priced books and artistic dreams of idealism. But this adventure isn’t just some simple self-aggrandizing pat on the back, but a visible example of the unconventional, yet attainable, road to following your dreams.

What you are funding is printing, design, editing and layout costs for my “greatest hits” book. A book that I can hand to a stranger and say, “I promise you will laugh, you will cry, possibly be aroused and yet, still walk away feeling inspired.” If you like the aggressiveness of Henry Miller, the recovery-speak of James Frey, the no-bullshit approach of Henry Rollins and the illuminating candor of the column Savage Love, this book will hopefully live up to your expectations. Thirty stories from six books, along with 15 additional rare or unreleased stories and the entire contents of the Bulletproof Hearts book.

And to those of you who followed my journey through my blogs over the years, I want you to know just how much it means that you gave me the opportunity to live this life. That to believe in an old kid like me, when only a few others have, has given me a permanent smile and guaranteed a place for each of you in my heart.
