A new musical by Christie Baugher, presented as part of the York Developmental Reading Series, October 2012!
My name is Leni Riefenstahl, and I’m going to tell you the truth...
For three months in 1947, notorious Nazi filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl is locked up in a French mental institution. Addled by electroshock therapy, she attempts to defend her life and her choices, weaving a tale spanning from her childhood to the end of the war. With the help of a band of young American soldiers who assume the roles of some of the most important men in her life, including Joseph Goebbels and Adolf Hitler, Leni constructs an elaborate reality all her own -‐ part cabaret confessional, part Tin Pan Alley fugue state -‐ that challenges the very definition of 'truth' itself.

Leni Riefenstahl Is Going To Tell The Truth, a concept musical for five actors, has been selected by off-Broadway's York Theatre Company as part of their Developmental Reading Series. It will receive a reading in October of 2012. For more information -- including further creative team information -- please keep an eye on the Developmental Reading Series section of the York website.
The piece is in the relatively early stages of development, which is why this opportunity is incredibly exciting and so unbelievably crucial. This reading will be the first time an audience is exposed to the piece. It will give me the chance to work with some of the best collaborative talent in the business and provide vital information which will help me create a draft of the show that will eventually be ready for full production.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
RISKS:
There are many for this project, absolutely. The subject matter is dark, difficult and potentially off-putting. This period in our relatively recent history is tricky territory for a reason: we as a global society are still grappling with how and why it happened. It scares people. It scares me. But to my mind, that's the best possible reason to explore something. I don't mind risking alienating a portion of the audience if it means I get to ask tough questions. That's when theatre is best, I think!
CHALLENGES:
Because the source material is so risky, the challenge is to create a piece that is engaging. It needs to be fresh, interesting and surprising even to the most knowledgeable in the audience. Bold and unapologetic new musical theatre is my passion, and my hope for this project in particular is that it not only gets people talking, but excited in the possibilities of the musical form.
