Your data at a glance, shown on a beautiful status board application designed for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
UPDATE 2 — This is it people. I believe this project can be saved. If we hit our funding goal by July 4th, The Board will be released as an Open Source project, under the ASL 2. Celebrate Independence Day in the US by giving The Board it's freedom from Software License Encumbrance!
UPDATE — We worked with José Padilla from Blimp today and I am happy to announce that we will have built in support for Blimp’s project management API in the The Board. We already have it running in prototype and it is pretty snazzy.
We are huge fans of Blimp at the League and are privileged to have had José take some time and help make Blimp support a reality.
Today we are inundated with data. News, calendars, projects, tweets and bug reports. The list goes on and on, and it isn't going to get any better.
What you really need is a solution for this problem, a way to beautifully visualize this avalanche of data, to filter it and primp it. What you need is The Board.
We are looking to sell the finished app for 19.95 a pop, for each supported platform. Unless we hit the Here, Just Take It stretch goal.
Who's behind this thing?
Allow us to introduce ourselves, we are the League of Beards. You might have heard of us.
Our founder, Chris J. Davis has worked with the billionaires behind companies like Skype and Rdio, as well as helped get that whole "WordPress" thing out there by committing to core and writing a book or two.
Throwing in on the design side is none other than Klein Maetschke, designer for the likes of Nike, MTV and the NFL.
Rounding out our Trio is Owen Winkler, former WordPress Core Committer, founder at the Habari Project and all around know-it-all.
With our powers combined, well, we don't form Captain Planet if that is what you're thinking, but we do have the skills, experience and style to pull this thing off. All we need is you.
Why a desktop app?
Although there are some really nice applications for mobile devices out there that provide status boards, the idea of hooking say a Nexus 7 or an iPad to a TV and leaving it running made us itchy. That really isn't a good use of the technology.
Mobile devices are meant to be mobile, not stuck next to a TV.
With the large selection of small, quiet, powerful computers on the market it seemed like a good idea to build something for them. So we did.
The first version of The Board is nearly complete. We need to button up a few more items and then get it into testing. But it isn't anywhere near the bag of awesome we want it to be. That's where you come in.
What will the money we raise go for?
Right now we have a prototype app that runs on Windows and Mac, but we need to put some effort into the Linux branch of development, and do the work needed to polish the prototype into a fully featured application capable of knocking your socks off.
The cashola we are raising will cover the last phase of development so we can release a product we can really be proud of. The absolute minimum we need to raise is $10,500. Of course the more money we raise, the more we can do.
That brings us to, stretch goals!
Stretch Armstrong? He ain't got nothing on us.
$20,000 — Getting touchy on Android
What is cooler than a status board app hanging on the wall? One you can interact with via multi-touch of course!
If we reach this goal we will have the resources to purchase the hardware we need to add multi-touch support to The Board. We are eyeing the 46in Multi-touch Overlays from PQ-Labs, and a sampling of computers to hook to them.
Imagine seeing a tweet roll by, being able to tap on it and respond, retweet or forward it to someone. Magic.
We will also have the funds to produce an Android version of The Board, one click away on the Android Market.
$35,000 — The Board, now with more Source Store
If we hit this absurd level of support we will add a source store to the roadmap. The app already allows you to add a set number of sources from our gallery.
With this amount of backing we can create a store so people can share custom sources, for sale or free. Call it the Source Store. Seriously, please call it that. We don't want to get sued.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Other than catastrophic events in the lives of the gents who are building The Board, there aren't many obstacles that can arise.
We are a dedicated team of talented designers and developers who have been around the block so to speak so we are well aware of the challenges writing software like this include.
Right now we support the same table and custom formats that Panic's status board does, as well as JSON formatted data streams that can be parsed and shown as graphs or as a list.
The panels currently snap to a 3 columns grid, with available widths for each widget being 1/2/3 columns. You can drag and drop the "widgets" to re-order them.
