A book on Smart Cities in the context of Climate Change.
A short documentary about the project:
Further explanation of the book from Raoul Bunschoten:
Smart Cities and Climate Change
The project is to publish a book on Smart Cities in the context of Climate Change: how to make them, where to test them. It is about creating the cultural and social change needed to address the challenges posed by Global Warming. The book demonstrates how cooperation and organisation over a complex geopolitical border can be used to leverage a reduction in carbon emissions. This is demonstrated through a new urban planning methodology called the 'Urban Gallery’.
Independence and autonomy has always been key to the project, with most of the work done by volunteers. This is why CHORA would like to fund the final stages with a Crowd-funding campaign. £115,000 is needed to complete the final research, design the book, editing, translation and to print three versions in English, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.
Simplified Chinese:
Traditional Chinese:
The Taiwan Strait /
The Taiwan Strait is a shallow sea between mainland China and Taiwan. But the Taiwan Strait is also a dynamic region, turning from a border zone on the brink of war to a cultural and economic hotspot, a space of development and innovation.
Atlas /
The first part of the book is The Atlas, which describes these dynamic changes with precise and beautiful maps, showing historical movements and regional religions as well as recent treaties, the emergence of the Minan language as cultural phenomenon and the possibility to see this region as a space of innovation, a natural incubator.
Manual /
The second part is a design manual for how to deal with this region. It addresses the need for a fundamental change in the way we use our resources and adapt our lifestyles and physical environments to the challenges posed by global warming and social inequality. For example it demonstrates how smart grids will be connected to other infrastructures, how waste cycles can be linked with educational projects, how an integral low carbon district can be designed and how different pilot projects will be connected over time to enhance their impact and efficiency. The manual uses a simple technique of cards representing the different components of a planning toolbox to visualise the process of designing key projects and dynamic masterplans.
Vision for a Smart Region /
The book proposes a vision for the Taiwan Strait as an enormous experimental design space, an incubator for any components, policies, actions, scenarios, Smart City projects around the world will need. It proposes to turn a history of tension and difference into an action plan of cooperation and creative production. During eight years many volunteers, students from universities, and experts have contributed to this vision and the preparation of the book. With only minimal financial assistance we have maintained strict independence from governments, local authorities and political organisations. The research we have conducted and the design of the manual and its application in two cities at the centre of the Taiwan Strait, Xiamen and Taichung, is radical and groundbreaking.
Book Design /
The overall project has been conceived by Raoul Bunschoten, and the years of preparation have been conducted by several teams in CHORA research, a not-for–profit organisation based in London. The Atlas as a basic format for this book has been conceived by the famous graphic designer Joost Grootens, who has made some of the most beautiful books in recent times. Grootens will do the final design of the book, which certainly will become a prize-winning book.

Crowdfunding /
In order to publish this book and maintain the independence in content and form, CHORA have launched a Kickstarter campaign. Crowdfunding seems the natural way to finance the final process of research, design, editing, translation and printing. Crowdfunding will be a unique way to present a vision for a geopolitical region and link this to the global search for tool boxes and visions for intelligent, 'Smart’ design and urban planning. The Kickstarter campaign enables anybody who is interested in contributing to this vision to make a pledge. Small pledges will be rewarded with an email with a pdf of a map from the atlas. Other rewards include the TSSR t-shirt or a set of playing cards from the book. Slightly larger pledges will ensure the contributor a copy of the book. A hard cover is available for the English language version, and affordable soft cover books are available in mainland China and Taiwan. For every pledge of £15 or more, CHORA will print the contributors name in the book.

CHORA is an architecture, urbanism and research cloud that was established in 1993 by Raoul Bunschoten. We operate as a cloud of research, teaching and practice clusters in London, Berlin and China. CHORA has a long-term commitment to developing new methods for architectural design and urban planning that help mitigate and adapt to the challenges of climate change.
NOT FOR PROFIT
This is not a commercial venture. The purpose of the Kickstarter project is to make the book available to the public, to get this rich resource and one-of-a-kind publication out there for people to use and learn with. All proceeds go to the production and distribution of the book. CHORA Research, a UK based charity, will manage the funds, and any overflow will stay in CHORA Research and be used to further promote the Taiwan Strait Smart Region.
If you have any questions about the project or want to know more details about the rewards, please do not hesitate to contact us at email@example.com or through Kickstarter.
The project would not have reached where it currently stands without the support of various people and organisations. Many thanks to the following: Netherlands Stimuleringsfonds voor Architectuur, London Metropolitan University, TU Berlin (start-up budget, Raoul Bunschoten), Joost Grootens (through generous free work on the early stage), Laure Thorel and Helene Binet (private benefactors), and all the volunteers over the years.
Work on the book and the overall project has been done in cooperation with participating universities, including: London Metropolitan University, Xiamen University, TungHai University, TU Berlin, PBSA Dusseldorf, and specifically the professors: ShuennRen Liou, Yuyang Liu and Wang Shaosen.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Once the money has been raised, there will be several steps to finishing the book, and also providing the rewards. Firstly, the content of the book will be finished by a team of people at Chora. Then the book will be passed to the office of Joost Grootens, an award-winning book designer based in the Netherlands, to finalise the graphic design and overall structure of the book. Meanwhile the design team will be busy manufacturing t-shirts, cards etc. in order to send out rewards to backers. Once the content and graphic design are finished, the book will be translated from English into Simplified Chinese (mainland China) and Traditional Chinese (Taiwan and Hong Kong). Then it will be printed and distributed.
Because none of this can proceed until we have raised the money, there is the possibility for time delays at each stage. We have tried to be realistic with estimating the time-frames for delivering each reward, and have established relationships with most of the people and companies that would be involved, but delays could occur to unforeseen circumstances.
