Update #9: Thank you so much!

Posted on November 13, 2009

Thanks to all of you who pledged during our Kickstarter campaign and helped us raise more than $6100! That money will help us cover our streaming and licensing fees as we bring you a brand new radio station at CHIRPradio.org -- launching in January 2010.

In addition to our web efforts, the Local Community Radio Act is expected to get a full House vote sometime this month, and the Senate is marking up the bill in the Commerce Committee next Thursday. All this means things are moving in the right direction so that CHIRP may be able to apply for a low-power FM broadcast license in the not too distant future -- more exciting news regarding our efforts!

But once again, we are so appreciative of your pledges. Your credit cards will be charged very soon. And once that happens, we'll begin sending out thank-you gifts. For those of you who requested shirts or hoodies, we'll be in touch to ask you about a size.

Additionally, you'll all receive acknowledgment letters and invitations to our CHIRP studio open house, coming up early in the new year. And be watching for news of all sorts of exciting CHIRP launch events happening throughout the next several months.

The photo below was taken in the CHIRP space at our most recent staff meeting. From all the people pictured (along with the many CHIRP volunteers you don't see), thanks so much!

Best,
-Shawn Campbell
CHIRP Founder and President

Wow, that's kind of a tiny little picture, huh? But our appreciation is HUGE!

Update #8: Homestretch!

Posted on November 10, 2009

Well, we're down to just over 24 hours to go on our campaign, and we're over $6000! Thanks so much to all of you who've made pledges -- we couldn't do this work without your support. As a practical matter, just a reminder that your credit cards will be charged for your pledge as soon as our campaign ends at 11:59PM tomorrow.

We're making great progress on the CHIRP space. Attached are a couple of pictures featuring the latest views of the CHIRP main studio in preparation for our launch in January 2010. We've just started the process of getting the air staff into place as well, so we're very excited -- things are seeming more and more real!

Thanks again,
--Shawn & everyone @ CHIRP

Update #7: Everything's coming along nicely!

Posted on October 21, 2009

You guys are so great! You've helped us pass our original $4800 goal, which should cover our first year of streaming costs for the web version of our brand new CHIRP radio station, launching in January 2010. Now we're on our way to raising our additional $1000 to cover our first year of archiving and licensing costs as well! Just $690 to go to hit our revised goal of $5800, and our generous music world supporters keep donating more great items for us to offer up as thank-you gifts.

We've got dozens and dozens of CDs and other items still available, and we'd hate to not have them find good homes. So if you're up for it, we'd love to have you share news of our campaign via Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, or other social networking. Our friends at Kickstarter make it all so easy -- just click the appropriate icon on our page to let your friends know about our campaign. Be sure to let people know that we're trying to raise an additional $1000, and that we have less than $700 to go to meet that goal.

CHIRP Radio wouldn't be possible without your help, and we look forward to bringing you a brand new station at CHIRPradio.org in just a few months! Please spread the word.

Thanks so much for your help,
--Shawn @ CHIRP

Update #6: Help CHIRP raise $1000 more before our campaign ends on November 11th!

Posted on October 8, 2009

We're thrilled that our campaign to cover our streaming costs has been so successful, and we send our huge thanks to you. But because the campaign runs until November 11th, we hope we can use this time (and a bunch of cool new thank you gifts) to raise some funds to cover additional costs related to our streaming expenses -- namely archiving and licensing fees.

Initially, we left these costs out of our overall goal because we wanted to be a bit conservative and make sure our campaign would succeed. But because our supporters have come through in such a big way, we're hoping we'll be able to raise an additional $1000 before our campaign ends.

If you've already given, thanks so much! If you haven't yet pledged, we hope you'll consider jumping in now, checking out our new thank you gifts from the Numero Group, Sub Pop Records, and the Old Town School of Folk Music, and pitching in a few dollars in support of CHIRP's efforts to bring a brand new radio station to Chicago and beyond.

Thanks again!

Update #5: Wondering why you haven't been charged yet?

Posted on September 25, 2009

A few of you guys have asked why your credit cards haven't been charged yet for your pledges. The reason is that Kickstarter doesn't charge anyone until a campaign ends. This is because pledges are only collected if a campaign is successful. If it's not, no one is charged. However, that's not going to happen in the case of CHIRP, since we're already thisclose to our goal! In fact, we're betting that we'll hit it today or tomorrow (maybe you'll be the one to put us over the top!). And that means your credit card will be charged as soon as our campaign ends on November 11th.

So far we've had more than 130 people pledge, but we're really hoping to get our total number of pledgers to 300 before our campaign ends on November 11th. So even when we go over our goal, we'd still really appreciate it if you would help us spread the word. Every dollar we raise above our goal will support the general operations of CHIRP, allowing us to make sure we have the best, most reliable equipment in place, strengthening our capacity, and generally helping us bring you a really exciting, listenable new radio station this fall.

So thank you so much for your support! Again, if you've already pledged, your card will be charged on 11/11/09. We'll continue to add new thank you gifts each week until the end of the campaign, so if you haven't pledged, now is the perfect time!

Thanks again!
--Your friends at CHIRP

Actually, to be 100% clear, your cards will probably be charged on November 12, since our campaign actually ends at 11:59PM on the 11th!

Update #4: Everyone who has pledged is invited to the open house

Posted on September 24, 2009

Just wanted to make it clear that anyone who pledges at any level from a dollar and above will be invited to the station open house later in the fall, and will receive the CHIRP button and window cling too.

I realize it only says that in the $1 pledge level gift listing, but that $1 gift level actually is included in all additional thank-you gift levels.

If you can't get another $215 in 48 days, I'll give it. Keep on keepin' on!

Update #3: CHIRP studio work is progressing

Posted on September 22, 2009

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for the flurry of pledges today! I just wanted to take this opportunity to post a photo of the progress being made in our air studio. We're just about done constructing the studio furniture, and we're starting on equipment installation. Here, you can see some of the layout of the equipment (although obviously many things are still missing...microphones, computers, racks, anything actually being wired, etc.)

When we put up the on-air lights over the two studio doors, that started feeling real. But seeing the equipment in place, even if it's just posing for a picture for now, makes it even more tangible!

Again, thanks for all your pledges -- We're within $1000 of our goal! Please help us spread the word.

Best,
--Shawn @ CHIRP

Update #2: True CHIRP believers

Posted on September 18, 2009

Once again, thanks for all the pledges -- you guys are great, and your belief in our project is much appreciated!

We had more evidence of people's enthusiasm for CHIRP at our new volunteer meeting this past Wednesday night. CHIRP has around 120 current volunteers, but at this meeting, we had a group of 39 (!) new people who were interested in helping bring a truly independent music- and arts-focused community radio station to Chicago.

It's always so gratifying to see that people believe in our work, and this Kickstarter campaign is a testament to that fact, as is the turnout for this great new volunteer meeting. We're more than 50% funded now, but we still have a way to go to get to that 100% mark, so please help us spread the word!

And if you're in Chicago, we'd love to see you at the Whistler (2421 N. Milwaukee) for our monthly CHIRP benefit night this coming Monday, September 21 at 9PM. We'll have live music from White Mystery and Bob Dey's Tank Engine Man, and CHIRP DJs as well. There's no cover (what makes it a benefit is that we get a portion of the bar sales), but get there early to make sure you make it in!

Update #1: Great start!

Posted on September 13, 2009

After just a few days of our campaign, we are a bit over 10% funded! Thanks to all of you who have already pledged. We've been having a great weekend in Chicago, out and about at a couple of the last festivals of the summer season -- the Bloodshot Records 15th Anniversary Beer-B-Q at the Hideout, and the Renegade Craft Fair in Wicker Park. It's great to get the chance to talk to potential listeners, and we've been telling them all about how this campaign will help make the station a reality later this fall. Please keep it up!

The Chicago Independent Radio Project (CHIRP) is a non-profit group of more than 120 volunteers working to start a brand new music- and culture-focused radio station. The online version of the station will launch in the fall of 2009, and the group continues to work to reform low-power FM law so that it can eventually apply for a broadcast license as well.
