I pledged $5.00. It's not much but it's something. Very cool project, and I hope it becomes integral in the city's culture.

What makes this project even more special (as if that were possible) is the caliber of people involved. Kudos for making a difference!

The first thing I thought of when I saw this project was that it reminded me of the type of things you see in european cities and towns. What it does is gives those locations their own unique identity, and Chattanooga is a city that has seen a lot of change in the last 30 years or so. What I like personally is that the typeface is easily readable, which is critical for road signs. I'm looking forward to seeing this project come to fruition!!

One of the wonderful things about Chattanoogans is that they rally together to make things happen. Incredible people! I wish you could have been at our presentation last week; it's available on the Kickstarter page if you 'd like to check it out. We have a long list that includes all the things you mentioned and more. We chose not to include some of them because we simply had too many! Suffice it to say, while we embrace the future, our history very much defines us and cannot be ignored. We believe we struck a good balance between the past and the future. Most of all, it was the spirit of the people in Chattanooga that inspired us. We accept this is our interpretation and others may have a difference of opinion. Fortunately - and maybe it speaks to the people's kindness - the vast majority of people embrace our effort. Please have a look at our presentations again. We sincerely hope you help us (as you already have!) continue the effort to make Chattanooga the first city in the US to have its own font. Thanks.

The Social Media Alliance of Chattanooga (SMAC) would also like to utilize the Cha typeface in the future.

As to Mark's points, although you may not think "Chattanooga" when you look at the typeface, it does have to be easy to read and usable. It cannot be busy or over the top. As often with design and brand mangement, the association will likely come after.

I'm just happy it's not a variation of Comic Sans. :)

Chatype needs to go back to the drawing board!

I’m sorry that I am just learning about this project in the 2/6/12 issue of the ChattanoogaTimes Free Press, but I’m new to the area and still tying to adjust.

I really do not believe that the current Chatype design completely captures the vibrant and progressive attributes of Chattanooga. It’s primarily the “slab- serifs” that make the typeface appear bulky, stuck in past history, and too close to existing typestyles. Adding colors to the Chatype definitely makes it more appealing, but the actual and practical use of the typeface will probably appear in one color only. The typeface should be clean and flowing without “deadweight slab-serifs”. Focusing on the Walnut Street Bridge for inspiration overlooks other positive current and futuristic attributes such as the Aquarium, Eco-Buses, electric car “fueling stations, the Glass Bridge, industries like Volkswagon, downtown renovation, true Southern friendliness, and this list could go on and on.

As a new resident in Tennessee and Signal Mountain, past advertising agency owner and operator for 20 years, and holder of both a B.F.A in art and M.Ed. Media Communications, I see Chattanooga through “a childs eye and imagination” and believe that this Chatype typeface should go back to the drawing board, as there’s definitely something better than this for Chattanooga.
