After a two-year hiatus, San Francisco-based artist Peter Hudson returns to Burning Man 2011 with his latest stroboscopic zoetrope.
OUR PROJECT WILL GET FUNDED!!!
Thank you all for your amazing support of Charon! We have reached our Kickstarter funding goal, which means we will be able to get the money that has been pledged. Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing model, so our goal was set at a level we hoped we would be able to achieve in a limited timeframe. Our total budget is larger than what we will be collecting through the Kickstarter campaign. A project of this scale requires a lot of steel! We are still in full fundraising mode, and hope to maximize our kickstarter collecting so we can spend more time on construction and fabrication and less time worrying about additional fundraising events.
WE STILL NEED CONTRIBUTIONS
If you “LIKED” us on Facebook, can you please make small donation to our project? All contributions are extremely valued, and we love all of our donors! Donations are the life-blood of any art project, and we couldn't have embarked in this venture without these generous contributions. Please know that your money is being put to good use. We are sure you will be proud to say that you helped make this art project a reality. You won't be disappointed!
PROGRESS TO DATE
All the money collected through Kickstarter will go toward making this project a reality. We are already hard at work. If you'd like to get a sneak peak to what we are up to, check out the video put together by Jason Tongen, who is documenting the building of Charon.
Building art for Burning Man is a labor of love. None of it would be possible without the blood, sweat and tears of dedicated volunteers. This ethos is what makes this work truly special. If you'd like to help us in the studio, please sign up to be on the volunteer list here:
And tell your friends! We have needs for skilled labor as well as general help for the many details of putting Charon together. It is a great opportunity to meet newl people, learn new skills and participate hands-on in creating a memorable piece of art.
WHAT IS CHARON ABOUT?
Based in Greek mythology, this visually-arresting piece will physically engage people in a vigorous genuflection of sorts which bring life to Charon, the gondolier to the afterlife. Charon engages them to reflect on their own mortality, and ponder how to give and get the most from their brief time here on earth. The artist’s hope is that they will not dwell on their ultimate demise, but instead ponder how they might make their own lives richer and more meaningful. Recent losses in the artist's life give him reason to consider the piece a final farewell and bon voyage to those who are cherished, gone but not forgotten.
WHY DOES PETER NEED MY HELP?
Plans have been developed and approved, and the project is the recipient of an important Burning Man seed-grant, yet a substantial amount of fundraising remains. Although a large portion of the work on the piece will be provided by volunteers, every penny donated by patrons will be put to use producing Charon. Practical considerations necessitating your donation include materials, transportation, and workshop space.
Your donation to this project grants you access to documentation of the making of this work and display-worthy commemorative pieces. The highest bidder will even receive the original model of Charon as a keepsake! But we think the best reward of your contribution is the fact that you will be able to make this work possible for our entire community to enjoy!
Exact models of the work and the specifics of its design are kept secret in order to preserve the rite of discovery of Charon.
Thank you very much for your advance support of this major work!
