Hey wonderful humans!
Exactly a year ago I nervously hit the "LAUNCH" button on this Kickstarter campaign. So much has transpired in the past year professionally & personally... Ordinarily I wouldn't have been able to process it... make sense of it... reflect on it... the good the bad... it all would've been a jumble in my head... but instead... the other day I compiled the past year on 1SE and relived it all in 6 minutes. And I was able to do that thanks to the support of all 11,281 of you. I am indebted to you indefinitely.
Speaking of which! I was able to mash that entire year in 15 seconds on an iPhone 5s running our latest update. FIFTEEN! YAY!!
Speaking of which... our update...
UPDATE on iOS7 UPDATE
Many of you have asked, and many of you are surely wondering... Where's that awesome iOS 7 update you mentioned last time??
I'll try to explain what is going on in as few words as possible.
We've had a huge update for iOS7 ready. Not only does it fix tons of reported bugs old and new, but it improves tons of elements of the App… many were mentioned in the previous update... less memory storage, faster mashing, photo cropping, & we were even able to move the "loading" screen to a background process.
Then we got a weird bug report that a compiled video in iOS7 looked fine, except when uploaded to youTube. Then more similar reports started coming in. They trickled in slowly because most users aren't compiling & uploading to youTube regularly. We brought in many beta testers with this issue who have dedicated a gargantuan amount of time to help us figure out why this is the case. Together we've conducted endless trial and error tests to figure the cause of this.
Every time we seemed to have the answer, we'd fix it, but the problem remained in many cases. Why are the videos that worked perfectly fine before iOS7, now showing up scrambled when uploaded to youTube? But sometimes they also work perfectly fine? After digging as deep as we possibly could, on Monday, it looks like we FINALLY found the cause.
This will start getting a little more technical... without going into meticulous detail of how we were finally able to figure this out… iOS7 has changed it's built in camera to use a new video formatting profile… which uses a new algorithm in it's compression… this is a very computationally intensive process so it's never existed on mobile devices in the past. Looks like iOS7 has applied this new format to videos shot on iPhone 5 & 5s, but not 4s or prior (so a user on an iOS7, using an iPhone 4s, is not afflicted by this).
Soooo… if you have seconds that were recored on iOS6… and seconds that were recorded on iOS7… which is most users… a compiled video using both formats does not play well when uploaded to youTube. Videos of different formats rarely like each other. And so far, Apple does not appear to provide a way to turn off this new profile or change it. In fact, I've yet to find any mention of these changes despite my best Google-ing efforts.
So where does this leave us right now? We can't update youTube obviously. We can't update iOS7 obviously. So we need to work with these restrictions and find a solution from 1SE. At the worst, the solution is we need to do a 1 time conversion of all previous snippets… but if you've been using the App a long time… say a year... we're looking at roughly 20 minutes to do the conversion. We may have to go this route, but we're trying to find a faster solution. Perhaps we can divide this conversion over multiple sessions? We have some ideas.
On the bright side, we at least have 1 option that we know will finally fix this, even if it isn't optimal yet. One way or the other, we know we need to get this to you ASAP. We never could've imagined that this bug would end up being SUCH a big deal. But trust me, no one will be happier to finally release this thing than us. We are not taking this lightly. It's all I think about. I can't thank you enough for your patience.
For those of you who selected "Android" when you pledged... expect a Kickstarter message from me very soon, that will include your personal "code" to unlock the App in the settings in case you're asked to pay beyond the free trial period.
The reviews have been fantastic, Thank you! And remember your friends on Android can try 1SE for free for 30 days:
There's at least 2 huge announcements coming to 1SE in the months that follow, and as always, you'll be the first to know. We're really excited to bring the 1SE experience to the next level! I can't freaking wait to share them with you.
Along with these announcements, I'll also continue to fulfill any unfinished reward tiers. Thank you for your patience, as I mentioned in previous updates, getting you the best possible App experience has been my first priority, and this update should provide that relief.
I'll close by sharing one of my recent favorite 1SE projects that was shared with me... Adva & Ben each recorded their own 1SE video in 2013 for 10 months leading up to their wedding day. They then put them side by side and shared them with their friends & family at their wedding. What a wonderful/beautiful idea! ;)
