So I had this dream last night.
I was crawling across an abyss of terrifying depth on a bridge made up of CE Murphy book spines, which crumbled and fell away into the blackness every time my weight shifted. My goal was to fetch an extraordinarily large shipment of CE Murphy books from one side of the abyss, where the publishers were delivering it, to the other. They weighed a huge amount, far more than the bridge could handle even if the shipment had been of the right books, but every time I managed to get to them, there was something wrong--wrong cover art, wrong book size, wrong title--and so I had to keep going back and forth across the disintegrating bridge in an increasingly desperate and panicked state. Finally, in the end, I got the right print run, but woke up before I got them back across the bridge.
I don't think that needs much interpretation. *laughs* My overt dreams, let me show them to you. :)
Six hours to go. $1120 to reach $20K, where another novella is unlocked (and I'll sing for you). I'm experiencing these wild oscillations: "OH MY GOD IT'S GOING TO HIT $20K!!!" vs "No, no *way*, it there's no way it can hit $20K..." I have no idea which extreme is right. It hardly matters, given that this campaign has already been vastly, wildly more successful than I ever dreamed it might be.
Current theme song: "Under Pressure" in a death match with "Wind Beneath My Wings"
The "No Dominion" campaign just passed $17,00. You, my readers, are paying me more than any New York City publisher has paid me up front for a book. This *blows my mind*. To little tiny bits. Itty bitty bits. I will have to spend rather a lot of time collecting all those bits so I can write you TWO NOVELLAS, FOUR SHORT STORIES, 3 chapters of a book that doesn't exist, and, um, a partridge in a pear tree, I guess. :) Seriously: the wordcount we're looking at here is right around 90K, which is absolutely no question about it a book's worth of words.
Actually, the first short story is done, and it'll be landing in your mailboxes tomorrow afternoon when the campaign closes. So let me take this moment to remind you what you're getting for your buy-in!
At $5: 2 short stories, the novella, a digital download calendar
At $10: the above & another short story
At $25: the above, a 4th short story & a second novella.
At $30, the above + a physical copy of the calendar
At $75, the above + a signed chapbook of the cover art photo shoot
At $100, the above + an 8×10 signed poster of the cover art AND a copy of the limited edition trade paperback
At $250, the above + a 2012 CE Murphy Dublin photography calendar
The "guess what number it'll end at" contest has now closed (so nobody can totally game it at the last second). Guesses that come in after this email goes out won't be counted, so I hope you got your guess in.
Me, I'm going to be sitting here hitting the reload button every minute or two, as my husband, who is standing beside me gawking at the screen too, keeps asking me to do. :)
-Catie, who is just a little hysterical right now O.O
All of you, individually and collectively, are amazing. I am amazed, and flattered, and...amazed. O.O (I'm also a professional writer. Don't try this at home. :))
The "No Dominion" campaign rolled over $16,000 a few minutes ago. Let me put this in perspective for you:
The most a traditional publisher has ever paid me up front for a project is $17K. You, my patrons, my readers, my friends, have offered up an advance that's within a thousand dollars of the most money I've ever been paid, and there are still about 72 hours to go in the campaign. I'm just sitting here trying to reel up my jaw and wondering how far this thing is going to go.
(I've just promised somebody on Twitter that if it breaks $20K, I will in fact do a video of me singing "The Wind Beneath My Wings" for my patrons. Because that seems COMPLETELY REASONABLE. :))
Okay, because this thing has gone utterly nuts, I'm going to run a contest for "No Dominion" Kickstarter patrons.
The campaign has about 72 hours left. I'll give an upgrade to the $1000 package*--which is "I'll write you a Walker Papers short story of your very own, featuring any secondary character you want" to the Kickstarter patron who guesses most closely the final dollar amount for the campaign.
The contest closes at 2pm Eastern (New York City) time on Sunday, November 13. If you want a chance at me writing you a Walker Papers short story of your own, all you have to do is buy in at $5 or more (yes, if you've already bought in you can just go place your guess, you don't have to put in another $5!), and place your guess in the comments on this Kickstarter update.
Note: I may or may not name a character after you, which is the $500 price point. That'll depend on the story. But the winner will get everything else a $1K package would entail.
Let the games begin!
