FLICfest (Feature-Length Independent Choreography festival) is back for its third year at the Irondale Center!
FLICfest (Feature-Length Independent Choreography festival), now in its third year at the fabulous Irondale Center, is the first Brooklyn festival dedicated solely to the art of feature-length dance. Because feature-length dance is an important form for the exploration of adventurous art and cutting-edge ideas, FLICfest gives artists a platform to explore the depth of their visions and for audiences to embrace adventurous work.
FLICfest strives to cement Brooklyn as a renowned destination for creativity and leadership in modern dance, while simultaneously strengthening the dance community through a platform for sharing ideas and information. FLICfest addresses a growing sense frustration with typical dance festivals in NYC; particularly their strict time limitations (making them more showcases than legitimate festivals).
FLICfest performances take place in six evenings, over two weekends. In that time, FLICfest presents the work of 12 choreographers on the main stage, plus informal after-hours cabaret performances in the FLICfest lounge, showcasing a wide variety of performance styles.
In its first two years, FLICfest has been met with critical acclaim, sold-out evenings, and broad press coverage in outlets including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New Yorker, New York Magazine, TimeOut New York and CultureBot. FLICfest alumni include Adrian Jevicki and Ran Shayo, Brittany Bailey, Carlos A Cruz-Velazquez, Elke Luyten, Erica Essner, Jordan Fuchs, Keith Thompson, Mana Kawamura, Merrymakers Dance, Niles Ford, Robin Neveu Brown, Company SoGoNo, Artichoke Dance, Jonah Bokaer, Tami Stronach, Dušan Týnek, Emily Berry, Jenni Hong, John Pizza, Layard Thompson, Theresa Dickenson, and Operation CMYK.
FLICfest 2013 will continue to present artists who represent a diverse theatrical aesthetic and who investigate the form through unique means. Each evening of FLICfest consists of two mainstage performances, at 7:30 and 9:00, followed by the Cabaret.
FLICfest 2013 choreographers are: Jillian Sweeney, Summation Dance, Chris Masters, Yin Yue, Amy Cova, Jordana Toback, Austin Selden and Sarah Konner, Maurice Fraga, Dana Salisbury and Mari Meade Montoya, Sari Nordman, Alexandra Beller, and Stanley Love.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
In our third year, our biggest challenge for FLICfest is that people will start to take us for granted and not see the urgency of funding the work. We have the same team working on FLICfest this year, so we expect that all will go smoothly. The choreographers are chosen; the theater is booked. All we need now is your participation!
