The Bearded Ladies will lead a city-wide and region-wide invasion of bold, innovative cabaret with two all new shows and a tour.
Who are we?
The Bearded Ladies is an experimental cabaret troupe devoted to exploiting all the possibilities of intimate, homemade theater through beautiful songs, tricked-out costume changes, drag, and virtuosic prop construction. With wit and sparkle we tackle the politics of popular culture, sex, gender, and artistic invention.
What is THE BEARDED LADIES’ CABARET REVOLUTION?
Through a generous matching grant from the John S. and James L. Knight foundation, The Bearded Ladies are now able to begin their dream of bringing our form of innovative cabaret throughout the Philadelphia region. We are planning:
· Two New Shows at The Wilma Theater November 2012, and July 2013.
· A Remount of our Wide Awake: A Civil War Cabaret at the Kimmel Center in April 2013.
· A Tour of one of our new shows to at least three locations throughout the Philadelphia region.
· Each cabaret will include collaborations with other Philadelphia cabaret and theater artists.
· Each cabaret will involve at least three street performances around Philadelphia neighborhoods to bring our work to new communities.
What are we going to do with your support?
We must raise 30,000 dollars in the next year or we do not get the matching support from the Knight foundation. We are asking our friends, collaborators, and larger community through Kickstarter to help us raise at least 12,000 of that amount.
We plan to:
· Develop and rehearse our new pieces.
· Pay collaborating artists.
· Buy more cardboard,
· Hire a stage manager.
· Hire an administrator to help us manage the Herculean task of getting all this done.
· By the end of next season we hope to have grown enough to be able to support ourselves through private gigs, parties, foundations, and ticket sales, so we can continue to fill Philadelphia with new cabarets.
Right now we operate on a small small budget. We make everything by hand, we eat together, and we stay up late making cardboard into all shapes and sizes. We don't want to change much of this. We believe that theater can be made cheaply, that it is about the audience and the performer relationship, not about how much a set costs. We do however need the support of our community to raise enough to pay for the time, energy, space, and organizational support as we make this work for you.
