This summer Buran Theatre will be initiating a series of community-invested performance based programming alongside our full production in NE Kansas.
Buran Theatre will initiate a series of performance-based programs in July & August of 2010 in Topeka, KS, Lawrence, KS & Kansas City, MO, including our full length production of THE HOUSE OF FITZCARRALDO, two volumes of performance events we like to call BLIZZARD NIGHTS and workshops for the communities we perform in.
Our full length production which will play the Kansas City Fringe Festival and (with your assistance) the Lawrence Arts Center and Topeka, KS will be devised from a series of source texts and material that the company will design and perform- the most prominent source being the 1982 Werner Herzog film "Fitzcarraldo." We have found this to be an exciting subject on its own and it is only amplified when considering the wealth of material that has been produced about and around the making of the film and the impossible feat of pulling a ship up and over a mountain. We will explore the world of Fitzcarraldo as a collective, with our own methods of devising, improvisation and research, smash up what has already been created, redesign the course of history, and end up with our own cornucopia of theatrical madness. And you can bet your bottom dollar there'll be a few big ol' musical numbers in there too (for good measure)! It proves to be wild and large, full-hearted and calculated, bawdy and sacred, but, most importantly, completely Buran.
As for the Blizzard Nights, we intend on these being variety shows of sorts that feature a local house band, local performers, and a sprawling narrative devised by company members. They will be bawdy and well lubricated events that will give us all a chance to market, produce and perform.
Alongside our performances we will also be conducting workshops, free of charge, for community members on engaging spectatorship and devising new work. This is an opportunity to come in contact with our audience in a way that allows for them to be a part of the ever-changing dialogue, to introduce a means of creation (one they can carry with them upon the workshop’s completion) prompting spectators to create in their own lives and on their own terms, giving the gift of a personal, active relationship with the theatre.
For our new project we are invested in what anthropologist John MacAloon calls cultural performance, “occasions in which as a culture or society we reflect upon and define ourselves, dramatize our collective myths and history, and present ourselves with alternatives.” Our methodology of performance brings a significant amount of agency to both performer and spectator. Buran’s most recent and successful example of this was the July 2009 production of Money Buckets! The Untold Story of FDR, which premiered at last years KC Fringe Festival, and directly confronted the fears of Americans in the midst of a financial crisis with the use of a “lost and found” Marx Brothers screenplay. We use past models of work to jump into new terrain and our current project for the summer of 2010 is directly informed by our previous endeavors.
We would like to raise at least $1,200 to assist us in making all this programming possible. We already have a slot at the Kansas City Fringe Festival, but need to pay for the Lawrence Arts Center , production fees for "The House of Fitzcarraldo," and production venues and fees for at least two Blizzard Nights.
The project will initiate June 21st with rehearsals and the production playing from July 23-Aug. 2 in Kansas City and August 5 & 6th in Lawrence, KS. The Blizzard Nights we have scheduled right now are July 17th and August 2nd. We'd also like to pick up performance opportunities as they come at us during this time.

*Critical Acclaim for Buran*
For Money Buckets!:
“Remarkable. The highlight of the festival. Pleasantly surprised and frequently stunned. . .an audacious act of creativity. It deserves to be seen.” - Robert Trussell, Kansas City Star
“The jewel in the crown of the Fringe Festival...flawless.” - Greg Boyle, KC Active
“Outstanding and seamless performances by the talented cast.” - KC Stage
For Meile be Akcento:
“A standing ovation and a sea of flowers for the actors showed that Meilė be Akcento placed the accents right where they needed to be. ‘A show is alive while it is still being talked about and while an audience is coming to the theatre,’ - said Vytenis Pauliukaitis. It seems that after the premiere of Meile be Akcento the audience will continue to come.” - Dina Sergijenko, Straipsniai
“Grand in scope...for what feels like a grand finale, [Buran] is digging where psychological horror and art history meet academic satire .” - Alan Scherstuhl, Pitch Weekly
For A Greater Release:
“With a cast of more than 15 actors...gives the audience something to think about while not neglecting the duty of entertaining. In short, [Buran] means to accomplish, all at once, all the things that professional theaters have such a hard time managing piecemeal.” - Alan Scherstuhl, Pitch Weekly
