A Special 'Thank You'

Update #4 · Mar 13, 2012 · comment

I would like to thank each of you for supporting this endeavor. It means so much to me that you would have the faith to pledge. I am both humbled and honored.

By now, you've received an email informing you that this project was not successfully funded, and although it may seem like bad news, I am walking away from this experience with many lessons learned and a feeling of satisfaction.  This was my first time I've ever put myself out on the chopping block like this.  The next time, I know a few things I would do differently.

I will be open sourcing pieces of the code for Meme Defense in the coming weeks.  Be sure to look out for it on my github account.

And please, stay in touch.  I'm always available for a chat.

Thank you all very much.

The Internet Strikes Back

Update #3 · Mar 2, 2012 · comment

Now is about the time to where I tell you a little bit about what I've learned the last few weeks.  There's a love/hate relationship about Meme Defense.  Some people love it:

"Dude, I checked out your Kickstarter page and it is hilarious :] Congrats on putting that together, and congrats on getting the artists/musician support! Can't wait to see what you guys come up with" - Ray Wenderlich  For those of you unfamiliar with Ray Wenderlich, he literally wrote the book on cocos2d.  No, seriously.

"I actually own most of the meme pages in North America with about 2M unique views from [them]. Saw you on kickstarter.. seems like a pretty cool idea. Interested in chatting? I think I can help with marketing." - Owner of big meme websites

And others thought differently:

"This is stupid. You are awarded no points, and may god have mercy on your soul." - Some guy on Facebook

"How many variations of AIDS do you need to have in your blood stream in order to make such a cancerous thing like this?" - Some guy who took the time to register on Kickstarter just to send this message

Regardless if you love it or hate it, it appears to have some validity:

  • Over 50% funded.  THANK YOU SO MUCH! I LOVE YOU!
  • 427 likes on Facebook
  • Press
  • More press from the blog
  • Other press - below the fold
  • The CEOs of a couple meme sites and a mobile gaming company have contacted me looking to help with various things like marketing and finding an Android dev
  • I was having a beer at the Creamery in the same T-shirt as the video and some guy stopped by my table and said, "Are you the meme guy?  Your video is super funny."

..  When I asked if he pledged and he laughed and said, "Not a chance.  I hate memes."  Oh well, the market can only go so far.

I'll keep you posted on any new updates.

Ten days left!!  It's crunch time.  Bully your family into pledging.  Blackmail your coworkers.  Steal the money your friends were going to give to the starving orphans.

That Awkward Android Moment

Update #2 · Feb 24, 2012 · comment

When you realize that Android users want Meme Defense, too.

Over the last couple weeks, this started to happen:

  • My friends with Android phones started having apple sauce and apple juice delivered to my apartment with notes like, "An Apple a day is only half of the story."  Cryptic, but I think I got their point.
  • I've received lots of messages about support for Android.  And while I've made a FAQ about it, the questions kept coming.
  • Messages like the one below started showing up on Reddit, Facebook, and forums

I think that's just cause to make an Android version.  Yay!

Any funding over the campaign goal will go to an Android developer to get started immediately.

Also, I've added three new reward tiers just for Android users.  If you pledge in those tiers, that money will go to the Android version of the game only.  No Apples Allowed.

Alpha Gameplay Trailer!

Update #1 · Feb 19, 2012 · 1 comment

It's been a big week for Meme Defense.  We've signed a deal with Retro Style Games for the art assets.  We're picked up interest from videogame music producer K-Murdock.  And we've raised over $1300 for the development of the game!

What better way to say thanks than put together a short video of the game in it's current alpha form?

Without further ado, I've uploaded the Meme Defense gameplay trailer to the main video of this project (Don't worry, you can still watch the previous video in the details).

Thanks!
