About this project
What am I doing?
Simply put, I'm traveling to various regions of the world, meeting with locals from all walks of life, and making lots and lots of portraits. EVERY person I photograph will get free prints or a CD, and the entire collection will become a book and online gallery. As the collection grows, I'll share the photographs with schools, profit / non-profit organizations, art galleries, and others interested in expanding the project's reach.
Why am I doing this?
There are nearly 7 billion faces in the world today, and each conveys an entirely unique perspective. Countless images honor this diversity, but these beautiful distinctions also create a new dilemma; that is, what do we still have in common? My goal is to create photographs that give you an opportunity to gaze into the eyes of people you may never meet, and discover something you can honestly relate to.
How is the project going to work?
The project is divided into six stages about 4-6 weeks in length, each focused on a different geographical region. At each location, I'll stay with hosts on the couchsurfing network, a reliable community that provides lodging for travelers worldwide. As for the photographs, some portraits have been prearranged, others will happen on the fly without preparation. How will I invest your pledges?
To make sure the project gets off to a running start, I've spent the past two years purchasing all necessary camera equipment, and funding for the first stage. Kickstarter will fuel a majority of stages 2-6, allowing me to complete the project in 1-2 years.
Stage expenses include:
-Travel (*flights*, trains, ferries, taxis, bikes, visa applications)
-Road materials (blank CD's and print postage for subjects)
-Project media (book publishing, t-shirts for kickstarters and subjects, stickers)

If you live in the greater Seattle area (100 mile radius), I'd love to offer a personal photo shoot for a contribution of $1000. The concept is up to you, whether a classic portrait, family group, or just hanging out with you and your friends for an afternoon! After we're done, you'll select your favorite image from the shoot to include in the book!

How about a location photoshoot anywhere in the United States? (yes, that includes you Alaska and Hawaii) For a contribution of $2500, I'll help you create a basic concept and fly out to meet you for at least a day of shooting (we can make it two if need be). Afterwards, you'll choose one image from the shoot to include in the book!

The ultimate location shoot, anywhere in the world (conflict areas excluded, unfortunately) for contributions of $4000. I'll fly out and meet you in your city of residence, favorite vacation spot, etc., and shoot two full days of photos. Your favorite image from the shoot will be included in the book!

I'd consider myself a Renaissance Man of sorts, practicing a handful of disciplines that all contribute to a truly engaging life. Photography is my primary means for connecting with people...anyone and everyone, and sharing/exploring different perspectives seems to me to be a great way to actively cultivate more respect and understanding worldwide. At 23, I'm grateful for so many unique and inspiring experiences...that said, the learning never stops, and I'm always working to create the useful, meaningful, and beautiful.
