After five years, a kidnapped boy returns home, testing a priest's faith and respect for the law.
Nor'easter is the feature film I've been working on for the past four years. We only have a few post production costs between us and a finished film. Please help us get there, and get a copy of the film while you're at it!
What's it about?
A young priest, Erik, serves as the sole Catholic authority on a small island off the coast of Maine. After a poorly attended mass, Erik is visited by Ellen Greene, the mother of a child who has been missing for five years. Josh's absence has pushed Ellen's marriage to the breaking point, and though her husband strenuously objects, she has decided to hold a symbolic funeral in an effort to move on. Erik agrees and recommends that she and her husband come to the church for ongoing support.
Yet when the family's decision becomes public, Josh inexplicably returns to the island, alive and well. Now sixteen years old, he appears unharmed, but refuses to answer questions about where he's been.
Erik involves himself in the investigation into the boy's whereabouts in an effort to both help the family and overcome his own insecurities as a man of faith.
Why did I write this kind of story?
I wrote Nor'easter to explore what I was most familiar with - Maine in winter - and what most interested me - the purpose of religion in the modern age. Why would a young man ever choose a life of faith today? How do the insecurities and shame foisted on any person of faith influence their decisions? What is to be gained through religion, when so little of the world can reach consensus about any aspect of it? And most importantly, how do we apply faith in our daily lives? Is it possible to do so without introducing conflict?
Nor'easter is the evidence of what I learned and how far I have to go.
Where does the money go?
- Post production costs - after the shooting stopped, we edited, scored, and stored the footage. A five-figure cost! Yikes.
- Theatrical mastering costs - after mastering the picture and sound separately, those two parts of the movie need to be "married" into a theatrical-quality copy of the film. And we need one backup at least! This is a four-figure cost. Yikes again.
- A proper DVD & Blu-ray run - so we can deliver this film in a professional package, with professionally created artwork.
- Artwork - got to have a poster, got to have a DVD cover. My drawing skills are... not great. So we have enlisted the help of the multi-talented Yen Tan to help us on our way there, and we need to pay the man.
- Image licensing - Nor'easter opens with four very well-known images, and we need to pay for the right to show them around.
- Music licensing - Nor'easter features two pieces of pre-recorded music, and we need to license the right to use them.
Nice trailer! Doesn't this mean the movie is done?
Actually, no. The trailer helps us promote the movie and to explain to others what it's about, but finishing the film in the way we describe above and making a QuickTime video of the trailer are two very different things.
What is Kickstarter?
Kickstarter is a site that allows us to collect donations from people in support of our project. What makes it such a great site is that we set a goal, we offer rewards, you commit to the amount you'd like to give, and you are only charged if we reach our goal. This ensures that either the project will be completed or no one will be charged a thing.
What happens if the money isn't raised in time?
We receive nothing! Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing fundraising site, so unless we cross the $20,000 mark before the countdown ends, we'll get nothing.
Can I increase my pledge once it's been made?
Yes you can!
Can we exceed the goal?
Yes, in fact we can raise as much money as we like, and it would be great if we could top $21,500, because Kickstarter & Amazon will take a combined 7 percent cut from the total raise.
Is my pledge amount publicly displayed?
No, it isn't. Your user name will appear in the list of backers, but the amount will not.
I'm not in America. Can I still pledge?
Yes, you can pledge from anywhere.
How can I contact you?
Thanks to all of you who have helped me along this journey. I've been working on Nor'easter since late 2007, and it's safe to say it has been the biggest project of my professional life so far. We are very close to having a finished film, and I look forward to being able to cross that line, share the film, and discuss it with each of you.
