Bronwen Exter dug through the underworld of the junkyard and emerged with pile of new songs.
NEXT SHOW: Porchfest, Ithaca NY September 25, 2011
- 307 Marshall Street - 1 to 2:30 pm
I sold my violin. That paid for the first half of my new album, Junkyard.
I've always had songs in my head, but since I recorded my last album, Elevator Ride, I think I've found my voice. Many people don't realize that I wrote only one of the songs on Elevator Ride. But on Junkyard, each of the fifteen tracks that will be on the final record tells a story from the last five years of my life. The songs I like the best I wrote entirely in my head—I wrote Resting House on a train, and Tire Swing in a car. Those songs came out so simply. My guitar gets out of the way of other instruments I might hear, and my brain gets out of the way of simply hearing the song as it wants to be.
The album as a whole is kind of about leaving New York City and coming home, feeling grounded in an ancestral way to a place. The title track is an homage to Oedipus who dies in a sacred grove of the gods, nobly rewarded for having suffered his blind, earthly fate. But because my suffering is totally cheap, it would have to be buried in the opposite of a sacred grove, a Junkyard.
We've got a bit more recording to do, plus mixing, mastering, artwork and duplication. And there are instruments still in my head that I'd like to record: a bass clarinet, a banjo, an old time fiddle, cello, trumpets, tympani drums, pedal steel. We've got most of it down, but we need help to finish it right.
I've got big dreams for this project, and until I can share my music with you, they won't be realized.
