Photo-main

BroLab will repurpose the courtyard at the Mott Haven Library into an open public space designed with guidance from the community.

What's your project?
Piazza Gratissima will be a site for community gathering, this public intervention will facilitate anything from outdoor readings to local barbecues and serve generally as avenue for civic discourse. It will be in the courtyard area of the Mott Haven Public Library in the Bronx, NY.

Developed entirely in collaboration with Bronx residents as well as community organizers and officials, Piazza Gratissima will be an inviting temporary structure complete with seating, out-door lighting, and custom surfaces. This public project will be presented in Spring of 2012.

What's the money for?We are raising funds to pay for building supplies and to hire unemployed community members to help us build the project.

How is the community involved?
A panel of people from the library, volunteers, community members will be organized to create a discussion on what is needed and how the courtyard will be developed.

What is this project in conjunction with?
Piazza Gratissima is part of an exhibition series titled Shifting Communities at the Bronx River Art Center. The gallery acts as a hub space for the project, an area were we can have meetings and form a committee with the library. Most of the projects in this exhibition are community based and deal with aspects of the Bronx neighborhood. It opens on September 9th 2011 and ends on February 18th, 2012.

Why fund this project?
The courtyard has been in disrepair for the last couple years and we would like to bring it back to life.

All donations are through the Bronx River Art Center and are tax deductible.

Bronx River Art Center (BRAC) is a culturally diverse, multi-arts, non-profit organization that provides a forum for community, artists, and youth to transform creativity into vision. Our Education, Exhibitions, Artist Studios, and Presenting Programs cultivate leadership in an urban environment and stewardship of our natural resource — the Bronx River.
