Puzzle Piece Tiles

Update #9 · Jan 14, 2012 · 3 comments

Hello, folks!

After very careful consideration, the other Brainstormers and I have decided that the puzzle pieces should stay as tiles.

We discussed options for interlocking, die-cut puzzle pieces – as well as options for puzzle pieces that fit together without interlocking – internally and with a manufacturer.  Every option discussed would have at least one of the following risks:

  • High likelihood of puzzle piece breakage.
  • Significant increase of production cost.
  • Change to fundamental gameplay.  Mainly, another layer or step would be added to a game that we want to keep simple.

And just as important is the feedback we’ve received from both our playtesters and a majority of our backers on this topic.  Most people who have played or seen Puzzle Me! have reacted positively to the tiles, which by itself is a compelling reason to keep them.

We continue to look into ways to improve the quality of the tiles; a subject that will be influenced by the manufacturer with whom we ultimately work.  And we also continue to work on the box dispenser idea, if for any reason because it’s a cool idea that we hope can make its way into the game.

Thank you for your ideas and your participation, everyone.  Please know that every message we received was taken into consideration as we decided what to do.

Most of all, thank you for your continued support!

- Richard and the Brainstormers Team

my wife and I also had the same discussion when I first pledged the product... pieces that fit together would be cooler.

The reason I thought the pieces should fit together is: "if the pieces dont actually fit together like puzzle pieces, why are the puzzle pieces at all?" The game could be a completely different theme that could be anything. For example it could be the tiles are computer chips and only some of the sides have "wires" to connect, so you must place the wires together and build the biggest super computer chip. I just think the theme of "puzzle" feels kind of weird/thrown together when the puzzle pieces don't actually go together like puzzle pieces.

I'm glad. If anything, the only fundamental changes I'd like to see to the tiles are 1) being made of a thicker, sturdier material -- I'll admit I hesitated over backing because the prototype tiles seemed cheap, and appeared to already be warping in the images -- and 2) have the images slightly larger, so there is less white space.
