A Short Dialogue Between YOU and BOA.
You: What is BOA?
BOA: The Bay One Acts Festival (BOA) showcases the best short plays from the most exciting independent theatre companies in San Francisco.
You: Ok, what does that actually mean?
BOA: This year, it means 11 companies and 70+ local artists coming together to create two full programs of bold, vital new theatre.
You: Cool, but what makes BOA so particularly special, and who are you people exactly?
BOA: For ten years, BOA has gathered the local independent performing arts community in a dynamic annual month-long festival. Each company produces an original, adventurous one act play by a Bay Area playwright.
This festival creates an incredible instant theatre community in San Francisco – building bridges between companies, cultivating connections between artists, and encouraging enthusiasm for the short play form. It’s also become a springboard for extraordinary new partnerships and collaborations between artists and companies, which continue to enrich our local landscape long after the festival ends.
The festival has showcased some of the hottest playwrights working today: Trevor Allen, Tim Bauer, William Bivins, Megan Cohen, Stuart Eugene Bousel, Bennett Fisher, and Lauren Yee, to name just a few. (We’re talking about Kennedy Center comissionees, Hyperion Project winners, Heideman award finalists, MacDowell Colony fellows... local authors with national reputations, and some fresh new voices to boot.)
Our past and previous producing partners include: Asian American Theater Company, Boxcar Theatre, Climate Theatre, Dark Room Productions, PianoFight Productions, Playwrights Center SF, Sleepwalkers Theatre, Threshold, Playwrights Foundation, and Woman’s Will. Even we are kind of staggered by that list.
You: Great, but that’s a lot of info to remember. I already forget most of it. Can you just tell me what you’re about again, but this time make it fit on a T-shirt?
BOA: Community, Collaboration and Creativity.
You: Awesome. So. What do you need from me?
BOA: Well, we’re throwing our 10th festival really soon, March 6 – March 26, 2011 at the Boxcar Theatre in San Francisco. You should totally come.
You: That sounds great!
BOA: It is! However, BOA can’t happen without your financial support this year! We seriously need you.
You: Me?
BOA: Yes. You know, you’re actually the hero of our BOA community.
You: ME?
BOA: Yes, you! You complete us.
You: Ok, so if I pledge, what will the money go towards?
BOA: Money you pledge goes directly to covering festival expenses. That means you’re helping to pay for: the Boxcar theatre space where we can intimately house our two programs of kick-ass little plays… evocative props so we don’t have to do any mime… paint to ensure the stage springs to life… stage managers to coordinate and orchestrate the action…designers to make everything sound and look gorgeous… script royalties to keep us legal and out of jail… the programs you’ll get to leaf through before the show… the posters and postcards by our super-talented graphic designer Cody Rishell… AND the published BOA anthology of BOA X plays – an incredible record of these ephemeral live moments, which preserves our festival’s memory forever in paper and ink. (If we make any profit, we’ll divide the proceeds evenly among all of our festival participants— it might be just enough to cover the coffee our artists swig down to make it through those late night rehearsals.)

You'll receive all of the above, plus a mixtape of the "Sounds of BOA" hand-selected by our sound designer and featuring the eclectic sounds you will hear during the BOA performances. This "mixtape" will be supplied to you in your choice of format (cassette, CD, or mp3).

You will receive all of the above and will be invited to the first all-company festival rehearsal which will feature a group table read where all of the playwrights, actors and directors gather to read the scripts. Libations and sweets will abound!

You'll receive all of the above, plus drinks with the artists after the performance hosted by Artistic Director Jessica Holt.
Pledge $500 or more Pledge $500 or more
You'll receive all of the above, plus a short 5-minute play written just for you by one of the BOA X playwrights around a theme or topic mutually agreed upon by you and the playwright.

You'll receive all of the above, plus your specially commissioned short play is guaranteed a production slot in BOA X.
