About this project

UPDATE July 9, 2010 We have just a few hours left in our Kickstarter campaign. Thanks so much to all you who have given so generously to help turn our little ol' independent film into reality. As we gear up for our shoot in Seattle next month, all you who have pledged to this campaign will be in our thoughts.

If you haven't pledged yet, you still have a few hours left to do so.

While we met our initial $5,000 goal so we can upgrade to a better HD camera, and in turn offer "Judas Kiss" as a Blu-Ray release next year, the additional funds our backers have supplied will help improve a lot of the production values of this film. It won't look cheap, I promise you!

People have given generously, even past the revised goal of $7,500. As of this update, we're at $8,805. We are thrilled! But I can tell you that every penny we want to raise before this campaign expires at 11 pm PDT today will go on screen — improved special effects, an awesome soundtrack featuring an eclectic mix of up-and-coming artists, and a well-fed cast (every film set runs on its stomach!).

Please, dig under your couch pillows for that loose change, check your coat pockets for that $20 you forgot about. Or consider your high-minded ideals about supporting the arts, and _do it_ tonight.

"Judas Kiss" is a movie about gay characters and straight characters, about inspiring lost souls to give life another try, about forgiveness, identity and redemption. For young people unsure about their place in the world, it carries an important message. About hope.

Same is true for those of us working hard to raise the money and make the film. We can all play a part. Click the button and help us out!

Best regards, Carlos Pedraza, Writer and Producer

UPDATE: JULY 2, 2010 Thank you to the first 55 Judas Kiss backers! We have reached our goal for our professional camera.

The good news is we can still accept new Judas Kiss backers! We have big dreams on our film. Like cool special effects and I have this awesome crane shot idea to give Judas Kiss the feel of a big studio picture. Please donate today and take advantage of all the special gifts!

After five short films, several Web series and multiple film festival awards, the time is right for our first feature film – Judas Kiss, an LGBT film for a generation aching for more meaningful stories and relatable characters. We are planning to shoot our film in Seattle Washington from August 13th-September 4th, 2010.

Our film is ambitious. We have a great international cast with a script that has already inspired people around the world to join our team. We have spent almost four years recruiting a production team that understands quality on a inventive budget, and creating a story that soars for talented performers. We have shared our struggles and achievements on our website, judaskissmovie.com.

Although we are well into fund-raising, we still need your help to make this film look like a million bucks! Our current budget only allows us to rent a Panasonic HVX. It's a great camera, but if we want to compete in a ever-growing techno-savvy film market, we're going to need a better a camera, and better accessories that go with that camera. We are looking at renting a professional high-definition camera and all its accessories to make our picture available on Blu-ray. Every dollar raised will go to making Judas Kiss a better movie.

We hope our story as filmmakers inspires you to help turn Judas Kiss from a dream to reality.

J.T. TEPNAPA received a bachelor’s degree in acting at the University of California, Irvine. He has appeared in many award-winning plays, features, shorts, and commercials, and was awarded The Ticketholder Award for Best Supporting Actor in “Spinning Into Butter” in 2001. In 2001 he directed, wrote, and starred in his first short film, Sunflowers, which appeared at that year’s Austin Gay & Lesbian Film Festival and Tuscon’s Outwest 2001.

The creation of Sunflowers also marked the birth of his own production company, now named Blue Seraph Productions. In early 2002, J.T. teamed up with longtime friend Charlie Gage to create Masturbation: Putting the Fun into Self-Loving. Masturbation went on to become a smash hit, screening in countless film festivals in six countries, receiving numerous awards, international distribution, and has even been featured in sex-education classrooms and documentaries.

J.T. then went on to write, direct, and produce two more short films, Drag Queen Heist in 2004 and Begging for Change in 2006. Both films received Best Short Honors at QCinema’s Fort Worth International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.

Capable and skilled in writing both comedy and drama, J.T. has been described by festival director Barbara Lee as “more than just the director of comedy films. He has become an artist of film; able to reflect to us reality whether it is absurd and laughable or serious and important.”

J.T.’s screenplay, Outing Joey, received top honors in Rhode Island’s Barren Branches GLBT Screenplay Competition. Competition coordinator Adam Short described the film as a “twist on contemporary gay and straight stereotypes bringing perspective to the tension between these two groups and our society’s need to push for greater acceptance of all its diverse segments.”

For nearly a decade, J.T. has appeared on of the longest-running Web series, Star Trek: Hidden Frontier, where he plays the openly gay Lieutenant Commander Corey Aster. He most recently was cast as Lieutenant Commander Hikaru Sulu in the Hug0-nominated Web series, Star Trek: Phase II, winner of TV Guide’s Online Video Award for Best Video SciFi Series. Featured in Variety, Frontiers, Fab magazine, the Today Show, MSNBC, and other international news outlets, J.T. is honored to be a part of the phenomenon that brings gay and science fiction together in the same sentence.

J.T. is producing his first feature project, the fantasy-drama Judas Kiss. His second feature screenplay is co-written by longtime friend, screenwriter and journalist, Carlos Pedraza. Although J.T. Tepnapa started his career off as an actor, he has found life to be quite rewarding as a filmmaker. He is honored to not only to have a career in filmmaking, but is also happy to share his journey with his husband, Adam Browne.
