About this project
DANCE MARATHON is a 3-hour participatory theatre experience inspired by the grueling spectator sport of Depression-Era America, where YOU the audience are cast as contestants in an actual dance marathon. There is a live band, a DJ, embedded performers, rules and referees, competitors to be defeated, friends to be made and prizes to be won. It is competitive, profoundly revealing and most of all – fun!
DANCE MARATHON has been performed most recently in New York at the University Settlement, and in Australia and Tasmania.
We have now been invited to perform DANCE MARATHON this summer at the world’s largest (and most competitive) theatre festival – the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe (www.edfringe.com). This rare opportunity to bring bluemouth inc’s unique theater experience to the illustrious Edinburgh Fringe is full of great potential. Many theatre companies and their shows have gone on to massive international success following performances at the Edinburgh Fringe.
Yet this time we cannot do it without your help and investment!
For a small company like bluemouth, each performance of DANCE MARATHON is an enormous undertaking. We have always done everything ourselves - find costumes, hang lights, compose music/sound, put up posters, wrestle with cabling, make the video projections, promote the show, and operate the technology. We’ve often done this without paying ourselves.
With minimal resources available to us this time, we've turned to Kickstarter.com for help in making this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity happen for us. Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing approach to arts funding. Your donation is accepted only if we raise enough money to meet our funding goal. If we fall short when the 30 days are up, your money stays in your pocket (and DANCE MARATHON stays home).
If you are in a position to donate, please consider helping us take DANCE MARATHON to Edinburgh. bluemouth inc presents is a 501c(3) company, so all pledges are tax deductible. If you help us achieve our goal, your pledge will go towards airfare, printing fees for postcards and flyers (our calling card at the festival), group housing costs, transportation to and from the theater, and so much more. Every dollar you contribute will help us take the Dance Marathon experience to the people of Edinburgh and beyond.
$2 is one ride on public transit for one artist traveling between the show venue and their lodging
$5 is the cost of photocopying the score for our musicians
$25 is one dinner for Lucy and Stephen after a rigorous three hour dance rehearsal
$50 is a bare-bones artist per diem covering all meals and beverages for a single day in Edinburgh
$100 is the cost of printing of promotional flyer hand-outs (since the competition for audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe is intense)
$1000 is the cost of shipping all of our equipment and props.
$5,000 is one week of accommodation in Edinburgh for the entire company.

We create original, immersive and interactive theatre events in unusual performance spaces. We’ve performed for audiences in funeral homes and run-down hotels, porn theatres and dog parks. We put audiences in heated sheds with headphones, in baseball games and rickshaw rides. We embrace collective collaboration and community. We do everything ourselves. We are committed to giving people unique and intimate theatre experiences.
