About this project
Why another iPad case?
The iPad is a beautiful, hi-tech, tactile device. Why would you cover
it with a hunk of plastic? The Envelope Case was designed to keep the
iPad safe without interfering. The design is
universal. What I mean is that, it could be used for some other purpose
years from now. The case will last for many years beyond the need to
protect your iPad. It's not just an iPad case. It can hold any number of precious items.
The Envelope Case:
The Envelope Case is a leather sleeve for the iPad 1 or 2, handmade in San Francisco. It's constructed with industrial strength contact cement and metal rivets. The thick side of the case has a fabric lining to protect the glass surface. The other side is of thinner leather that stretches to hold the iPad firm. The flap is held closed with hemp twine, and has a pocket that can be used to hold cards, a shammy, The Mustache Stand or whatnot.
I have made three versions of the case. The first is brown and white leather with brass rivets. The second is black and gray leather with silver rivets. The third is a Kickstarter exclusive. It is black and red leather with silver rivets, and an engraving of an eagle.

The Mustache Stand:
The Mustache stand is made of acrylic and leather and works with both the first and second generation iPad. It can be used to watch movies, for typing, or for reading. The stand was designed to fit in the pocket of The Envelope Case.

The tools used:
The leather is cut and engraved with an Epilog laser cutter. A burnishing tool was constructed out of an old roller bearing. An antiquated rivet press was brought back into service for this project. The new dies leave an interesting embossing that makes every case unique. My style is to merge hand craftsmanship, traditional materials, and new technologies.

The materials used:
The materials are all acquired locally, except for the hemp twine. No hemp twine is manufactured in the United States. The leather is of the highest quality. The colors and textures may vary slightly from the cases shown in the pictures.

What the funding is for:
With a large enough order of materials, the cost savings would make this project possible. The limited run and handmade construction method make this an expensive proposition. Production of a larger number of units speeds things up. With your support we can
make this project a reality.

Shipping:
Don't forget the shipping cost!
Due to USPS having such a bad record in international shipping, all international shipping will be done by FedEx. The exception is Canada. Sorry, I realize this is expensive but I want to make sure you receive your backer reward.

Connected as Gustavo Pastre (136 friends)
My name's Gustavo Pastre and have been an artist/craftsman my entire life. When I was very young, I used to think everything was made in factories. It shocked me when I realized that people are responsible for crafting items, not giant robots. My processes are old fashioned and newfangled. Cast iron hand presses and lasers. Nothing would make me happier then to craft all day.
