About this project
We're a band of good friends who love playing music together, and for other people. We've been called hippies, hipsters, indie rockers, and pop lovers, but when it comes down to it, we don't really fit into any of those categories. All we know is, when we play music, people dance and sing, and we have SO MUCH FUN.
Since we started this band over two years ago, we’ve played as much as possible. Borrowing our friend’s van, we’ve toured the Northeast, performed at colleges and venues in many states, been featured at independent showcases in New York City, and driven to California and back during our National Tour in 2009.
Now, it’s time to plan this year’s summer tour, and we need a van to do it. This van will be our new best friend, a great addition to the band, and a necessary part of our future as a touring group of musicians. But we don’t want any old van- we want a van that will run on vegetable oil.
So let’s talk about this “vegetable oil hippie van.” What is it? Why do we even want one? Well, we want to do our part. There are limited resources on this planet of ours, and we’d like to recycle those resources as much as possible. We’re willing to smell like grease and stop at Chinese Food Restaurants instead of gas stations in order to contribute less to the degradation of our beautiful world and the air we breathe. Grease burns much cleaner than gasoline, and after all, Rudolph Diesel invented the diesel engine to run on organic oils not fossil fuels! Playing a show in a different city every night means LOTS of driving, and LOTS of gas, so why not just forget the gas and recycle the oil that’s already been used at restaurants?

You can help. Your donation will make it possible for us to buy a used diesel van, convert its engine to one that runs on vegetable oil, and save thousands of dollars in gas and thousands of breaths of fresh air so we can drive across the country in an environmentally responsible way.
We're asking for $8,000, but hoping to raise even more than that. $5,000 will cover the used diesel van, $3,000 will fund the engine conversion, and anything over that will be put toward CHECKING OUR BRAKES, van insurance, a van repair fund, and paying a publicist to support our tour this summer. If we don't reach our $8,000 goal, we won't receive any of the money we've raised, whether it be $25 or $7,999.
Your donation will help us bring our music to listeners all over the country. With your help, this can really happen! We are so grateful for your support, and so excited to play music for you.
Love,
Kaila, Luke, Colin & Danny

Big Tree is an angular pop band for naturalists. These five good friends have created a sound that taps into organic folk, greasy blues, ambient rock and modal jazz. For the members of Big Tree, every moment making music is a joy. The pervasive spirit in the sounds they create makes their music vibrant, fresh and alive. Based in New York, Big Tree has been described as "...a most unpretentious group melding sunshiney hippie enthusiasm with epic post-rock breakdowns..." (The New York Observer). Big Tree's mix of urban and natural soundscapes create a dynamic and elegant style.
The members of Big Tree met studying jazz together at Sarah Lawrence College, and this influence is clear in their ability to musically communicate with one another. Big Tree's appeal comes from the band's diverse musical background. Big Tree loves Radiohead, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Neil Young, Aretha Franklin, The Band and Tom Waits, to name just a few. Because of this wide variety of influences, Big Tree's musical product is hard to categorize, yet immediately appealing: infectious pop music splashed with colorful harmonies, driven by pulsing rhythms, chock full of poetic and quirky imagery, all situated in rich and diverse sonic landscapes.
Big Tree has always recorded and produced its own recordings, but live performance communicates the intensity of their true passion and energy. The band's sunny disposition seems to melt even the iciest crossed-arm critic. Big Tree's greatest love is playing music, and their aim is to infect and inspire audiences with this love of music as well.
"Wonder is what comes out of this curious group. Wonder. Big hearted wonder... Big Tree reminds us that the world is ready for experiencing." (Indiemonday.com)
