An event combatting gender stereotypes in music while encouraging girls’ empowerment and creativity through songwriting.
Bellingham Girls Rock Camp is a not-for-profit event that is being organized as a Senior Project for Fairhaven College. B'ham Girls Rock Camp is dedicated to combatting gender stereotypes with regard to music; as well as encouraging girls’ empowerment through creative expression in music.
This event is a weeklong day camp where girls will be given the opportunity to learn a new instrument, form a band, and take a series of workshops influenced by feminism and the DIY movement. Some workshop topic examples may be: Song Writing, How to Record, A History of Women in Music, Zine Making...etc. On the final day of the event (saturday July 14th) B'ham Girls Rock will host a showcase where each band is invited to share what they've learned throughout the week by performing a song they've written. This performance will take place on stage and be open to the larger Bellingham community.
Our goal is to raise $1000.00 (although we would LOVE more). This will cover the expense of the venue, publicity, instrument rentals, and workshop supplies (notebooks, pens, paper, guitar pics, ear plugs, drum sticks). Our ultimate goal is to offer this as a FREE program to the young women (ages 8 to 15) in our community.
