$30,000 and Gameplay Video #1
Hi Kickstarter!
We know you've all been anxiously awaiting gameplay video, and have we got something for you: Check out this footage of the game in action at GenCon 2012's First Exposure Hall.
In other news, we hit our $30,000 stretch goal - upgraded sand timers. Towards the end of the Kickstarter, we'll be launching a survey of backers to learn what colors you'd like to see. Currently, the timers we are using have black caps with white sand, but the sky's the limit (electric blue with bright orange sand, anyone?), so start making suggestions you'd like to see in the final survey.
Our next stretch goal, $35,000, will replace the cardboard chits for the orange Energy and purple Crystals with plastic or glass beads, comparable to those seen in Tom Vasel's video. We've already found and priced the manufacturer of those little asymmetric gem-shaped beads, so we're hoping to have something really exciting for you there. In addition, when we hit this goal, we'll reveal the first rewards in the [DELUXE LEVEL] package.
This has, however, revealed our next goal in the [GAMER'S PACK] - 2 additional plastic tool types and 1 more scenario. At $60,000, we'll be including a Fire Extinguisher Tool and a Stun Baton. For the moment, we'll just say that those will be useful in the attached scenario.
We should have a full game walkthrough video posted later this week, and thanks for all your support so far,

@Richard - Four additional sand timers will be included in the Systems Critical expansion to allow for ten players. There are not currently any plans to expand beyond ten players, though it would be easy enough to do in the future. We are very serious about finding non-cardboard figures for use in the game, but custom sculpted figures are well beyond our budget until we are producing several thousand games.
Creator Richard Gray on September 17, 2012
I guess there's a few big questions in regards to timers that will ultimately decide, but they're questions that would need to be answered by BFR Games since they're the ones with the information.
The first is, how cost prohibitive would four additional sand timers be, and can those other four be delayed until the expansion releases? It makes sense if an expansion adds additional players that it would contain all of the basic elements needed for those dditional players as well. This might also include game trays and other things being added as well.
Second, are there any plans to expand the game beyond the 10 players already made possible with the expansion? 10 interchangeable bases, trays, and sand timers would already be 4 more than your initial plans, but it is at least a set number. If you plan on having games for 12 or more people (numbers that I think your average playgroup will rarely have) then you'd be looking at twice the amount of player materials than you were originally planning.
Third, how serious were the plans to find non-cardboard figures for use in the game? If you're going to go the color-coded route, then you'd also need to have an interchangeable base or ring. Alternatively you could use a different color for each figure, but then you lose the flexibility of players choosing the colors they want to use (since it will be tied to the figure color instead of the number of players.)

@BFR Games: First, thanks for the hard work and what I think will be a great game!
In terms of the idea of making the character pieces color-coded (i.e. making a character's marker, dashboard and sand timer color-coordinated), I still think it's a good idea. I understand this will make future characters harder, but I'd guess there are enough colors that are distinct enough from each other to make it work.
Or, alternatively, each character could have a distinct color set/palette (e.g. blue/green on marker and dashboard, and a sand timer with blue caps and green sand).
Thanks again and keep up the great work!
Creator Herb Petro on September 14, 2012
I'd like to see black caps with red sand, and also red caps with black sand.
Creator Julia Gosztyla Ziobro on September 14, 2012
How about 8 sand timers, black sand, different color caps (rainbow) so people can choose their fave?
PennyGems! Acrylic gems from Michael's are, well, not special.
Creator PHGraves on September 14, 2012
Well... crackers. Go ahead and throw logic at us. :P
Creator Michael & Kassie Jennings on September 14, 2012
Hmm an excellent point, wasn't thinking about expansions. My thought was the six characters shown all have a predominate color so that was the match. I still vote for the black sand though.
Creator Break From Reality Games on September 14, 2012
@Alan - The 10mm translucent purple are essentially what we are looking at.
For everybody else - Wouldn't we need to have a unique sand timer for each new character, or have characters that share timers and thus can't be played together?
Creator Michael & Kassie Jennings on September 13, 2012
I like the cap color idea as well. I think Black sand would be cool and fit well with the space theme, plus it be something different. OR to build on Eric G's idea the have the sand color match the caps.
Creator Alan De Smet on September 13, 2012
I like Eric G's idea, colored caps matching the character markers would be a nice bit of redundant coding, making it easier to look at the blue marker on the board and quickly identify the human attached to it.
Maybe you've already found markers you like, but consider these for either energy or crystals: http://www.wholesalersusainc.com/decorative-crafts/acrylic-nuggets.html They're the exact same tokens Ascension uses for scoring markers. (Ascension uses 10mm clear for 1 pt and 20mm red for 5 pts.) They're cool looking and satisfying to handle. I wouldn't worry about "stealing" the idea from Ascension; anything you can buy from Michaels Arts & Crafts store seems fair game to me. (Indeed, I bought a pack from Michaels just a few weeks ago to use as tokens in another game.)
Creator PHGraves on September 13, 2012
I have to agree with Eric G. This was the first thing that I thought of when the option was revealed.
Creator Break From Reality Games on September 13, 2012
These are all immediately excellent suggestions!
Creator Eric G on September 13, 2012
I think it would be cool if each of the player had a color. So that player would have a standee of said color and their sand/caps would also be of that color. It might help people quickly find a player's character on the board at the beginning of the game. (Bob's sand timer is blue, look for the character on a blue standee; instead of looking for the mechanic character.)
Some people might not like that, so maybe the survey could have a "rainbow" option for those that would like all different colors of sand.
Creator Kai Alexis Price on September 13, 2012
Very helpful video, thanks. And I agree that--without neglecting your sand-timers--having a specialized Zdamage Control iOS/Droid app timer available could be vey helpful.
Creator Lyrael, TOWoEOS on September 13, 2012
I'd love a purple&gold 'royal' sand timer. ;)
Creator Jonathan H. Liu on September 13, 2012
One thing I think would be cool if you get to the app-timer level (and beyond, I suppose) is to have a timer app that actually incorporates the damage report cards into it. So the timer goes off and then displays the damage you take. Or another interesting option: a timer that isn't *exactly* three minutes long, so you don't know precisely when things are going to happen.
