About this project
In 2002, I began writing and recording. A few years later, I began offering my several-hundred-song collection under Creative Commons licenses through Jamendo. While I still offer music this way, THIS album will be sold online through other channels. Over the past few years, I have released a song here and a song there, but this project will reflect a long-incubating creative impulse - as well as a more mature approach to songwriting and recording. Historically, I operate on a fairly low budget. By backing this new album, you are helping to make this my best work to date.

Yes.
While I will, of course, be working to sell copies of the finished album to the general public, the material itself will be given a "free" license. In particular, Nantucket Sound will be released under the Creative Commons Attribution license. This means that any owners of this music will be "free to copy, distribute and transmit" the music. Owners will also be able to freely remix/adapt my music. Owners of "Nantucket Sound" are even free to make money using my music, if they are so inclined; sounds crazy, doesn't it? The only stipulation is "attribution." If you are unfamiliar with CC licenses, read about the license I have chosen here. And if you would like to see a successful example of a "copyleft"-friendly business model, by all means, have a look at Jamendo. While Creative Commons licenses may not be for everyone, I am a firm believer in the peaceful coexistence of freedom and, if desired, profit. To borrow from the GNU/Linux community, you are not only free to use these materials, but I encourage all of my listeners, past and future, to enjoy the music and other media that I make available with the utmost freedom.

Bert Jerred is a singer/songwriter from Upstate New York. Since 2002, when he began experimenting with songwriting and home recording, Bert has released several hundred original songs for free under Creative Commons licenses, primarily through Jamendo.com. Bert’s music can also be licensed through Jamendo and other music services.
Bert holds a BA and MA in English Literature from SUNY Oswego and has worked as an educator since 1997.
