Photo-main

The culmination of four years spent driving America's northernmost road - Alaska's Dalton Highway.

Completed in 1974, Alaska's Dalton Highway (known locally as the haul road) is the northernmost road in America. At 414 miles, the predominately dirt road follows the northern half of the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline, and is maintained solely as the transportation route for the oil fields at Prudhoe Bay. The road was opened to the public in 1994.

The road is void of stop lights and stop signs. Void of crossroads and shortcuts. There are no mailboxes or power lines. No fast food. No coffee shops. Only north or south. Advancing or retreating. At the end, always oil.

I have been driving the road, and making photographs of the landscape, people, light and life since early 2008.

I'm very close to realizing, visually, the story that I have endeavored to tell. I'm confident that I can complete the work this year - one more late summer trip. This time, instead of heading north from Fairbanks, I'll be making the drive (and a ferry ride) from my new home in Juneau, through Canada, up to Fairbanks and ultimately the road. Currently, I can not make this trip without support.

I'm hoping, with kickstarter, and your generosity, I can complete this story with a strong final long push on the road. I'm offering, in return, some pieces of the final trip; through postcards, letters, prints, stories and handmade artist books.

All prints will be archival pigment prints, printed on fiber paper, signed, and shipped flat. 4x5 prints will be a selection from my final trip. For 8x10 and larger prints, I will provide you with a selection of 3-6 images from my final trip, or, you may choose from previously made photographs from my website.

The artist books will be staple bound, 8.5x5.5 inches, and will consist of different edits, with original writing and design. Ultimately, these little books are how I will begin to tackle the final editing process. Each will be an experiment in shorter stories, sequences, narrative and geography, and be comprised of 12-14 photographs. Each book will be unique.

All money pledged above travel/expenses will go directly to fund the next phase of the work, through a full book mock up, portfolio and exhibition prints.

Thank you for taking the time to view this proposal. I hope you will follow the work as it concludes. I appreciate your time and consideration.
