Seoul Shakespeare Company aims to produce William Shakespeare's Tempest in Seoul South Korea with a team of Korean and foreign artists.
On an evening in June 2011, 7 board members of Seoul Shakespeare Company met to discuss the future. The whisperings of a storm, a veritable Tempest in Seoul, began to take shape on this evening. Fast forward to February 2012: half a year of pre-production and team assembly, a director and design team with an ambitious vision, and a full cast of eager actors have brought this Tempest closer to Seoul.
Shakespeare performed in English is rare, basically non-existent in South Korea. Shakespeare, though written centuries before our time, still holds incredible relevance to modern humanity. No matter our nationality, his themes and his motives relate to the very core of our human nature. No matter what language his words are translated to, or even what shape his vision takes, we are able to understand his message.
With this project, more than ever, Seoul Shakespeare Company aims to dissolve cultural boundaries. With Native Koreans working as both designers and translators, our goal is to bridge cultural boundaries we face every day as foreign artists and audiences in Seoul. Performed in his native tongue, we hope to make Shakespeare fully accessible to a non-English speaking audience.
The Tempest is Seoul Shakespeare Company's second full length production and our most ambitious project to date. Renting theatre space in Seoul is not a cheap or an easy task to accomplish. Add to this rehearsal space rental, costume, prop, set, poster/playbill printing and we are left with quite a daunting bill at the end of a production.
