03/08 - Woohoo!

Update #9 · Mar 8, 2012 · comment

Only 9 more illustrations to go and I feel like I'm picking up steam. A number of things hppened in the last ew days that have bolstered my energy - sold a painting, have a new gig to hang my work, and got to borrow a friend's camera. Time is moving quickly but I'm staying on schedule - print, print, print till the 15th then it's back to paint, paint, paint.....but in the meantime -

It's important to me to post pics of what I'm doing. Not only is it  a record of the work but it also provides people with a way of seeing the process and possibly the intent behind each  print or painting. And now that I have a friend's camera, till I can get a new one, I'm going to post, post, post!

For some printers, silk screen is a meditation in  perfection. Their goal is to make each print a flawless endeavor. I don't work that way - I apply mediums and techniques to makes sure each print is specifically it's own work. Sometimes I muck with the base layer or background, sometimes I treat each screen with extra medium so the line image comes out blurry or chunky or washed out. Printing, for me, isn't an excercise in perfection. Just like everything I do, I'm driven to make imperfections the artful center of my work and spot light the beauty of the individual - like people. I enjoy what the imperfections can imply in each print. However, the implications are left (almost) entirely to the inks and mediums and what they highlight or eliminate on the page.

P.S. I love the absense of the silvery/grey ink in the background of "Madame seated". The watermarks make the print what I wanted it to be; and the 1/2 removed mustard yellow splatters and washed out/blurry lines in "When I close my eyes I can see him"  finish the print exactly the way I wanted them to! Yay!
