Tipografia di Sicilia is a book of photographs studying the relationship of typography and signage with the land and people of Sicily.
During a trip to Sicily in the summer of 2007, I was in awe of the rich typographic landscape that scattered the cities and towns throughout the independent island off the coast of southern Italy. The tattered and gritty signs, scrawls and messages, seemed to be telling a story, creating a narrative for the land and the communities these signs inhabited. I photographed hundreds of signs and lettering throughout the island, in cities and in small towns. The archaic and raw landscape of Sicilian towns and cities juxtaposed with these signs create a wonderful mixture of the new with the old, while showcasing the coarse reality of communication.
With my love for typography and photography, I started laying out a book to help narrate the story the signs tell, about communication and Sicily as a modern and historical island of harsh realities and their proud independence.
I have been color correcting, editing and pacing the pages of the book for the past 3 years. I have written the introduction, edited down the book to 117 pages of full color photographs, and now I am finally ready to go to press with the book! You can take a look at some of the images, and some extras at the book's website http://www.tipografiadisicilia.com
This has been a dream of mine to make this project come alive, so others can see the blend of type and environments come together in such a unique place on earth.
There are two main aspects to this project which are in need of funding.
I am looking to produce a limited run of a premium high quality hard cover book. The cost of printing short runs of books is extremely high and my goal is to print 50 books to start. 90% of my funding goal will go to the printing of the book
The second part to this which I am currently in the process of doing is finding the venue for an exhibition of selected photographs from the book which all funders will be invited to. This aspect of the project will vary in scale depending on how much I can raise to help pay for the venue.
Thank you for your generous support!
