A grad student gets taken to court, when research on arts advocacy & community threatens to reveal some uncomfortable truths.
"A is for Artist" was inspired by my work as a grad student in American University's Arts Management program. For my thesis, I asked working performers to define Community and Arts Advocacy.
The answers I received were just the beginning of a much larger dialogue, anywhere from the difference between arts advocacy and artist advocacy, as well as how the professional lives of working artists affect their civic ones.
This is the 2nd Kickstarter campaign we've done to produce a show, and our first one, for Pinoy: A' merican Tale was very successful!!
The mission of the company is "to share the values of communities by collaborating, creating and telling stories through the performing arts". So the money will cover basic financial needs, the primary ones being fees required to participate in the festival, totaling over $800. The secondary, but no less important ones, are the artists' fees.
And, even then, the money raised will only cover a portion of the artists' times, the rest of which the artist are graciously donating to the project. Every little bit helps, and thank you in advance for your consideration,
- JR Russ, Vision Director, A Way of Life Productions
Over $900 of the funds raised will go to the covering the cost of participating in the festival, i.e. the application fee, the registration fee, and insurance.
The remaining amount, a little less than $1,600, will go to compensating an ensemble of 6 people for a solid month of rehearsing and refining the play. So each artist will receive around $230 to work on this show for 30 day, with at least 3 rehearsals each week and working on the piece in between. That breaks down to a little less than $60 a week for at least 12 hours of work.
We believe the time of the ensemble is worth more than that, and if we raise above and beyond our goal, that would be awesome. We also realize the limitations of our ability to fundraise, and of our supporters to give. The amount set this year is based on having set the same goal last year.
Wondering about the set and costumes? All of that will be items that the ensemble has or can be borrowed.
