Update #8: Progress Update

Posted 7 days ago

Our deadline is fast approaching to complete page layout and get ready for our first sample runs next month.

We are on track and things are coming along exceptionally well.      We will be contacting everyone at the end June to doublecheck addresses and such for everyone who will be getting the early first runs of the books.

Update #7: ISBN and Publishing....

Posted on May 2

Just wanted to give everyone a quick heads up on our progress...

We have our ISBN number assigned for this first book:

ISBN: 978-0-9855974-0-5

and we will be publishing under our own publishing company: SYZYGY PRESS

Marty and I are working insanely on tightening things up, adding in the still coming in quotes, added photo's and other last minutes items as our deadline approaches so we can do the advanced publishing on June 27th and then go into full publishing mid-July.

Back to work, much to do!   :-)

Update #6: Support for post-Kickerstarter Backing Pledges

Posted on April 5

Hi,

So in the early update it was mentioned we'd put something together to allow those who still want to pledge or want to upgrade a pledge up to a higher amount.   For those who asked it they could pledge higher then $250.... We really appreciate the enthusiasm but I think the current levels of pledges are more then generous enough, so if you'd like to make a pledge, please select one of the 3 we've set up.

One pledge is an UPGRADE ONLY.   Please use it if you are at the $100 pledge level and now wish to move up to the $250 to have your name put in the book and get that level perks.

So here is the link:

Thank you once again and we'll have up some photo's from our trip up in a couple of weeks....

Update #5: Atari Trip...

Posted on April 5

The interviews have been going better than planned, we are getting such a huge response from the Atari folks and more and more persons we never knew of are contacting us and this is exactly what we wanted, to get as many voices into the books as possible.

We have a trip to CA. planned in a little over a week away, we will be meeting with a lot of Atari employee's, heading to the county records buildings, picking up a lot of donated items for both the book and the Atari Museum and we have an exceptionally important interview we've been granted that we are doing while out in CA...   will reveal the details when we return, but its a biggie :-)

Steve Wozniak just inputted some quoted into the book on his work on Breakout and we can't thank him enough for not only his prompt response, but such a detailed answer.

Regarding Pledges...   We've been getting a lot of people who want to pledge the $250 level or want to see if they can upgrade their $100 pledge to $250 and a few of you crazy people asked if they could pledge $500 or $1000 to the cause... all I can say is that is some incredible enthusiasm and support....

Kickstarter doesn't have a mechanism for taking in additional funding after a project deadline is closed, however I will post an update in a day or so where those who wish to pledge additional pledges or those who would like to still be able to pledge the $250 or more pledge to get their names immortalized in the book.... we'll have something readied through our storefront, we'll create a category for Book backing Pledges and people can choose from several selections, thanks again for your incredible support....

Will post some post-trip photo's when we get back.

Regarding "Kickstarter doesn't have a mechanism for taking in additional funding after a project deadline is closed," if you think there's still new kickstarter customers out there you can start another project to finish off the book and just set the goal really low. I've done this effectively too.
Certainly your own storefront has its own advantages for people who already know you exist.

      from the FAQ
      --------
Can I split up funding for the same project into several projects for each stage?

If each stage of the project is distinct and there is ample time between them, raising funds in stages is doable. There are potential issues with backer fatigue (asking the same audience multiple times for support) and reward fulfillment — you are responsible for fulfilling the rewards from each project, so setting up a series of projects whose rewards can only be fulfilled upon completion of the final one may be problematic. If you’ve thought through these issues and feel confident in your plan, go for it. People have definitely done this effectively.

      Rylan,

That's a great comment.... It doesn't really cover this situation, people want in on this book which is a whole stage in itself. Now Book #2 for December would be the next stage, we aren't ready to even think of starting funding on that yet, even though technically we are overlapping some of our interviews and trips with some of the people who will be featured in that book, were just doing it to be most efficient with our time.

      Thanks

Of course you know your likely backers far better than me. But I know from experience stage is a very loose definition. A second project for the same book using the same video and everything can certainly grab new customers especially if you had a high number of actual kickstarter hits (as opposed to social networking). I suspect the always growing user base for this site drops in only occasionally and there aren't email alerts for search terms, basically a second project just gets people that didn't happen to see you the first time or couldn't commit earlier. Since the projects a certainty the goal could be so low one pledge meets it. Anyway best wishes on these books.

Update #4: Moving along very well....

Posted on March 2

Just a quick update ---

The cross checking interviews are going incredibly well.... some additional info, names and events have come to light and are being added into the appropriate chapters.       Marty and I will be out in CA the end of the month for a week long series of group lunches and dinners with quite a few employees to get additional materials and interviews.

Keeping this under our hat for right now, but we've scored a MAJOR victory with tracking down a very important individual who was completely unwilling to be interviewed by anyone but has agreed to meet with us for a full disclosure interview and we will at last provide some very clear insight into events within very key times in the company, so this is going to end up being fresh new information and material for readers to gain access to like never before...

Also want to make clear, because many have approached us and asked "Is this going to be some kind of kiss and tell scandal laden book..."    We have no interest or intention in such things, lets leave that to the gossip rags at the supermarket check out lines.    This book is about the culture and the people, the struggles and triumphs in creating products and working for a company unlike any other to ever exist and one that most likely will never exist again.

Will post another update after our next big interview sessions.... still on track for July for release.
