Our group is seeking to fund the creation, refinement, and production of a cycle of three full-length plays titled (a)Symmetry Cycle. The cycle as a whole will be an exploration of the interaction of science and free will, molecules and decisions, in human lives and relationships. A fusion of science and theatre, (a)Symmetry Cycle will follow the classic cycle structure of creation -- destruction -- rebirth as viewed through the lenses of biology, chemistry, and neuroscience, respectively.
o NUMBFEEL--Girls, Boys, Bodies, Biology
A play about what attracts us to each other and what drives us apart.
o DUMBSPEAK--The Chemistry of Falling Apart
A play about entropy, the tendency of all things to disintegrate into disorder.
o BLINDSIGHT—A Neurological Rebeginning
A play about what we can do when we forget what we have been, how we are all powerful beyond our wildest imaginings.
Funds would be used to secure rehearsal and performance space for a full-length (4-week) run of the play cycle, print promotional materials and programs, fulfill the budgetary needs of the plays (props, costumes, etc) and pay stipends to a majority of the 30-40 artists and non-artists involved in the creation, production, and publicity of the cycle. Because theatre is a stupendously collaborative art form, we are excited by the prospect of being able to involve a large community of artists and scientists from various disciplines in the creation of what we hope will be more than a presentation, but in fact a theatrical and scientific happening, a grand event. In order to produce such an event, we will be hiring three directors, three full casts of actors, three stage managers, a publicity director, a graphic artist, a composer, a lighting designer, and a house manager. In addition, we are soliciting the contributions of three visual artists or photographers, one for each play, who will interpret the themes and scientific concepts of each play through their own media. The work of these visual artists will become part of the sets for the plays.
A rising tide raises all boats, and in this time of economic uncertainty, the more artists who can be given the opportunity to practice their craft through the generosity of single project, the better for the community as a whole. The creation, development, and production of (a)Symmetry Cycle will give us the chance to provide an artistic outlet for a great number of artists and generate a focused, invested audience community. In addition, we are actively working to build a partnership with the vibrant Chicago science community, because when you think about it, we are all working on the same human problems. We believe that the type of plays we are creating and producing will fill a niche in the Chicago theatre landscape that is currently unfilled, and educate both theatre- and science-minded patrons on how closely we are related, and how much we have to learn from each other.
