'Heroic Chess' A Modern Chess Variant and Roll Playing Hybrid Board Game for two people.
This pledge campaign is for the design and manufacture of a first edition, first run production line of a board game for two players. This is an advanced modern Chess variant and roll-playing game hybrid that is much more exciting to play and requires only a few additional components than a standard Chess game. It offers much more rich and varied game play filled with the risk of roll playing while keeping it structured within the familiar Chess game environment, and no game-master is required. Heroic Chess uses a classic Chess board and pieces that move about under the same rules, until a confrontation occurs that is. In Heroic Chess for a player to capture an opponent's piece he must draw a card that will add either an offensive advantage or disadvantage. Then the player makes his move based on the risk factor. He may choose at this time not to attack and still make a non-attacking move. The card is placed in the used stack. The success of an attack is based on the stats of the two pieces involved, the dice rolls of both players, and the card drawn by the attacker. If the attacker is not successful he loses his turn, and win or lose it is then the other players turn. The board also comes with an overlay that changes with the tide of battle. Using the overlay a larger theater of battle is created, allowing games to go on over a series of events leading up to a larger victory for the winner. The card set and overlay add a unique setting in contrast to the starkness of a regular Chess game. The cards will be created with rich artwork adding to the imaginative possibilities for players. Future game expansions could be easily updated by offering updated card and overlay sets and it could also be easily converted into an online video game one day. The pieces would also be changed a bit more towards the Tolkien universe, for example the Bishop would be a Mage, the Knight a Paladin, the Rook a Tower, etc. The pieces would be elaborately designed and sculpt by myself. Also I will make molds so that I can inexpensively produce the plastic figures myself. I am a highly skilled and talented professional artist and digital illustrator and have been in the publishing and marketing game for over 15 years so I can do all of this myself. Game Component Details:
The Board – A classic Chess board
The Pieces – All pieces will be similar in how they can move and look the same with slight variations to reflect Tolkien mythology. Two laminated cards with Attack and Defense Stats for all the pieces will be made for each player to have in front of them. They will be the same for both sides with different artwork and color schemes.
The Cards – The deck of 40 cards is shuffled before play and placed in the card dispenser. After the entire deck has been dealt it is reshuffled. A card is drawn at the beginning of an attack. After it is read it is then placed in the used stack with the back up so the other player cannot see what it was. After reading the card if the player still wants to attack he must apply the variable on that card to the attack. If he decides not to attack he can still make a non-attacking move. The cards will offer an equal chance of either an offensive advantage or disadvantage. For example an offensive advantage card might say your enemy’s food lines are delayed by storms making the men hungry. Your attacks do 4 points more damage. This will give a player an added incentive to take a risky move or detour him from one.
The Dice – If a player makes an attacking move on another player they will go into Skirmish mode. In this mode both players roll two six-sided dice. The attacker rolls for damage and the defender rolls for defense. The damage attack is the attackers dice roll with points added or subtracted according to the card drawn and the stats of the piece used to attack. The damage defense is the defenders dice roll and the stats of the piece used to defend with. The player with the highest total wins the Skirmish. An example of piece stats would be a Paladin (Knight) would have more attack power than a Tower (Rook) which will have more defensive power.
The Overlay – This game has two battlefield modes; Contested Battlefield mode and Defensive Battlefield mode. The game starts out in Contested mode. During this mode the first player can only get the other player’s King in Check, but once this happens the Battlefield mode changes to Defensive and toward the side of the player that was in Check. In Defensive mode all remaining pieces are removed from the board and placed aside. An overlay is placed on the board that creates defensive barriers for the defensive player. This overlay can be used for both sides by simply turning it with the defensive side pointing in the appropriate direction. The board is then reset using only the pieces left for each player. How the empty spaces left by the lost pieces are arranged will be determined by that player. In Defensive mode the defensive player’s King can be placed in Check Mate ending the game. If the defensive player puts the other player in check the game goes back into Contested Battlefield mode, the overlay is removed, the board is reset using only the remaining pieces, and the game continues.
