About this project

We are Artists at Play, a collective of creative professionals in the Los Angeles area.  We are currently planning a theatrical run of CHING CHONG CHINAMAN, the hilarious and irreverent comedy by up-and-coming playwright Lauren Yee.

This debut production by Artists at Play will be the Los Angeles premiere of the award-winning and recently published play.  Turning every cliché about Asian American identity on its head, CHING CHONG CHINAMAN introduces us to the all-American Wong family: Ed the patriarch loves to golf and mom Grace wants another child; Desdemona obsesses over early admission into Princeton while her brother Upton is focused on World of Warcraft superstardom.  To ease the burden of homework and free up more time for training, Upton acquires an indentured servant from China.  Life in the Wong household is turned upside down with the arrival of Jinqiang (“Ching Chong”)... who harbors his own American dreams!

Our show is set for a 3-weekend run at The Actors Company in November 2011.  We have set our Kickstarter goal at $3500, which will roughly cover venue rental and rehearsal fees.  As a theatre-producing entity, we aim to create entertaining and challenging work that is accessible to anyone and everyone, and we believe CHING CHONG CHINAMAN is the ideal inaugural project for us.

We are so excited to introduce this show to you and the Los Angeles theatre community. We also look forward to what's in store for us as Artists at Play.  Thank you for your support!

Julia Cho, Peter Kuo, Stefanie Wong Lau, and Marie-Reine Velez are Artists at Play. We aim to curate quality theatre, presenting stage productions missing from the local landscape, stories of communities underrepresented in Los Angeles theatre. The audience experience is our priority, and we want to make theatre accessible to everyone.
