About this project
Article is a Brooklyn-based art, clothing, and music label, and if that's not enough, it's also a website, a blog, and more importantly for the purpose at hand, a zine. The first issue of the zine is that awesome image above. It featured art art and writing from:
BJ Warshaw, Maxim Ryazansky, Rachelle Mintz, Bill Hayden, Griffin Creech, Eric Wrenn, Cody James, Brigitte Grice, Greg Hathaway, Tod Seelie, Jacob Septimus, Matthew Jensen, Darryl Nau, Ed Zipco, Greg Rutter, Moses Sandrof, Ian O'Neil, Konstantin Sergeyev, Megan Plunkett, Nicholas Chatfield-Taylor, and Nicole Demby.
On top of that, what really made Issue One special was the mixtape the zine was packaged with, which included not one, not two, not three, but FOUR separate mixes curated by some of our favorite people: Joe Ahearn, Alex Heir, A.P. Smith, and Noah Venezia.
The zine was inspired by the underground presses of the 1960s (and at times the Yellow Submarine), and its pages are arranged in a sequence that you can only understand if you stop thinking about it all so much. Each issue is hand-packaged and magically sealed with a numbered golden wristband that will get you into many, many Article happenings for cheaper. Sometimes you'll find a little gift from around Article headquarters waiting for you inside the cassette box too!
But now? Now things are really getting interesting. Issue Two is ready to go, with more art, more writing, and more importantly, more mixtapes. All we need is the money to get it printed, and, ok, maybe also to keep us fed in pizza while we sit in an assembly line packaging every single one.
Issue Two features art and writing by Blake Marquis, Kelly Bowman, Brad Downey, Santiago Mostyn, Dan Funderburgh, Matthew Hock, Scott Meyers, Jon Bocksell, Mike Force, Steve Roberts, Travis Millard, Andrew H. Shirley, Jacqueline Lewis, Ignacio Uriarte, Avi Davis, Jacqueline Di Milia, Alex Smith, Drew Morrison, Ralph Vazquez, Tad Kimball, Jaimie Warren, and Garrett Fevinger. The mixtape is curated by Christopher Weingarten, Stefanie Bridges, James Mulry, and Tod Seelie.
While we love mixtapes and ridiculously small art, 1,000 copies of the zine end up being more expensive than you'd think. 1,000 cassette tapes, 1,000 printed zines, 1,000 double cassette cases, 1,000 wristbands, 1,000 hours of work.
The whole thing ends up costing about $3,000. If you all would help us with $1,000, we'd be more than happy to send you some stuff and it would definitely get us started on getting everything done!
P.S. The video... Yeah, it doesn't have a direct connection to Article Magazine except that we threw that party, got arrested for that party, threw that party again.
