Update #9: So what's next?

Posted on February 2, 2010

As of yesterday KCSM has all of the Art2Art episodes!
The program director gave us the thumbs up for the "content check" so we are now onto the next couple of hurdles.
We are looking to have our DVD's remastered onto a specific tape format so we can send them on their merry way for Technical Review, and once that's passed we will submit for closed captioning and get our playback schedule. Closed Captioning and scheduling can happen at the same time!
We're getting closer an closer to actual air-time!
Whew, what a great education we've received working through this project!

Thanks for all of your support

Update #8: Post Production of Art 2 Art

Posted on January 15, 2010

Hello All-
We have a little update on where we are as of today, the post production work takes time and we have a few more hurdles to jump before we see the finish line.
Our editor is working on completing the 14 episodes of Art 2 Art, as he finishes them Guy and I will review the programs, once they have our stamp of approval on them, we then hand deliver to the Program Director of KCSM.
Guy and I delivered the 5 of the 14 episodes to the program director of KCSM, last Monday. We now have received 3 more episodes, from our editor which we are in the process of reviewing before delivering to KCSM. This means only 6 more episodes to be delivered to us.
We figured if we can deliver them as they are finished this would streamline, the
Program Director's job, which is to review each episode for content. Once all the episodes are reviewed and approved they will then go to the Technical Department at KCSM.
Once that is all approved we them will receive a time slot for Art 2 Art. Whew!!
Yes, many hurdles but none to tall for us to manage, we feel great about the results we are seeing and I especially have to give a huge THANK YOU to Guy Magallanes, his explanation on watercolor techniques are like none other that I have seen on instructional TV. I know once you see the programs, you all will agree the tips he will be sharing are golden. I even picked up a few new techniques from the Master. And not to mention the entertainment on this program will keep even the non-watercolorist involved and wanting more.
So that is my update for now, we are getting so close.
I just want you all to know Guy and I so appreciate your belief in us and Art 2 Art, thank you all from the bottom of my heart!!
Joyce

Update #4: Art 2 Art Editing and Filming

Posted on December 4, 2009

Hello All,
Just an update on how our project is progressing. We just viewed the final cut of episodes 3-6 and Guy and I along with our talented Director/Editor Matt Chapman, are thrilled with the outcome of program Art 2 Art. The lesson is informative and entertaining, nothing will compare, we promise. I know we have been telling you how fun our instructional program is and yet you have only seen a short snippet of our show. Guy and I so appreciate your trust in us to get the job done.
We are finding how slowly it does take to get an entire season of shows together. I do promise all you wonderful "Backers" we are working hard at keeping this project moving forward. December 12 & 13th 2009 we will be filming our final 4 episodes to complete our season. Matt will then be back in his editing mode and we hope to have all the episodes to our Program Director at KCSM sometime in January. Once this happens, KCSM will finalize any technical support to our series. If all goes according to plan the show should air April or May 2010. All of us here at Art 2 Art are working hard to make our January deadline. As you can see we are so close to making our goal, and we thank you all, from the bottom of our hearts for your support.
The set is small Matt has built a new sound wall to prevent any echo sounds. Matt has also added 2 more cameras, bringing the total to five cameras. This gives Matt so much more film to go through, which adds so much more opportunity to get the right shots at the right time.
Here are few more photos of Guy and I right before the cameras roll.

Posted on November 23, 2009

Guy and I filmed three more episodes yesterday Sunday November 22. Thank you to Matt Chapman and our Cameraman, Darren Schmidt. You two are so great to work with, from beginning to end. Also a big thank you to Gary Graham our best boy, assistant, you made our day run just ever so smoothly.
I have to say again, a huge thank you to all the Art 2 Art "Backers". All of us here on the Art 2 Art set appreciate you believing in our project.
Our goal to complete 13 episodes is so close, as well as our goal for the Kick Starter project is at 60%.
Four more episodes, slated to be shot December 12 & 13 2009. This will complete our 13 epsiodes for our PBS series,
Big hugs to all of you!
The photo - Matt Chapman is getting us hook to our microphones. Of course this moment does not slip by without something hilarious from my good friend Guy.

Update #2: Got our "backs"! Big Thanks

Posted on November 21, 2009

It's always a great surprise to see who is backing us! Thanks so much!
I am demonstrating for the Society of Western Artists today, which is very exciting since they are the first group that asked me to instruct a watercolor workshop way back in 2005!
As soon as that is completed I immediately come back Home (the gallery) and then we all do a couple of run throughs with the cameras! We are filming 3 episodes tomorrow, egads!
We're making a few adjustments to our set-up from the recommendations from the Program Director of KCSM. So right now the gallery is set up for filming - like a little film studio. I'm still working on some of my steps but am so excited for this shoot as Joyce and I are gonna paint koi! That little co-host is finished with her koi paintings and they look beautiful - Just you wait and see!
Again thanks for backing this project - we are so thrilled and excited and Thankful.

Update #1: Fiming and Editing for Art 2 Art

Posted on November 17, 2009

This Saturday and Sunday we will be back in the studio filming episodes 7-9. This will be a three episode lesson. Guy and I will be painting Koi. As most of you know Guy Magallanes has mastered painting Koi, you can see some examples of his work on web site, www.guymagallanes.com
However I have never painted this subject, I see this lesson as "The Master and The Student". Guy will approach his painting using his fabulous technique light to dark painting one color at a time. And I will be using my dark to light approach and at the end we will see who is the true master of painting Koi. Either way we promise this will be a lesson to watch.
This week we were fortunate to have a performance coach Steven Memel, come to our studio and give of us some valuable tips on addressing the camera. Guy and I are always looking for new ways of improving "Art 2 Art". Another technical addition to our program will be a hand held camera so that the director can get closer to filming the lesson and capturing those Guy and Joyce moments.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your generous donations to "Art 2 Art". It means so much to Guy and I to have your support. I will keep you all posted.

JOYCE FAULKNOR
I have been teaching art since 1991, I was the founder of Emerald Lake Art Academy, Redwood City CA. Finding a great combination in teaching as well as painting was my main focus. I began writing articles for the artist magazines as well as having my artwork published in "Splash 8" and "Splash 10" published by North Light Books. In 2003 I was approached by North Light to write an instructional book. As I began to write my book, I found the lessons flow out of me, I had so much to say after the years of teaching. In 2006 my book titled "Stunning Crystal and Glass" was published and on the book shelves of my local book. No bigger thrill than to walk in any bookstore and see my work on the shelves. In 2006 I also was invited to the UK to shoot a "how to" DVD which is the companion to "Stunning Crystal and Glass". In 2006 I partnered with Guy Magallanes, where we together created "Art 2 Art". We began filming Art 2 Art for public access television, our program received an award for "Best Instructional Program". Since then we shot three 60 minute episodes of Art 2 Art, never owning the copyright, we decided it was time to take on the responsibility of shooting our own program for PBS.
Over the past years of being a full time artist I have found that it is a constantly setting goals, obtaining the goals and learning how to keep reinventing yourself, as well as the many hats an artist must wear to keep your career alive and moving.
GUY MAGALLANES
Artist Statement
Influenced by my Grandmother, I paint images of landscapes and flowers, but with heightened exaggeration for drama’s sake from my Grandfathers’ influence. I paint images you probably pass by daily, but express how I see it, full of life, each image having a unique story to be shared. I am continually amazed at finding new techniques in watercolor trying to capture the energy I feel when first “finding” an image.
I grew up in the best creative environment a child could have and vividly remember watching the magic of creation unfolding around me at all times. My Grandmother indirectly gave me the gift of consistency, and to search for the surprises and regularity that each season brings. My Grandfather gave me the gift of innovation and wonderment, finding new uses for anything he came across. An avid storyteller, he made his adventures even more colorful each time they were retold. My family shared meals at a table where family history fed imagination and the soul and homemade meals were served to feed the senses and body.
About Guy
Guy’s creative background has included many of the arts, from acting, dancing and singing on-stage to theatrical set building and costuming all the way to fashion design. In the textile arts, he created sweaters, sold his remarkable line of sweaters, and sweater kits. He also created unique basketry which sold at the Gilroy Garlic Festival. In the publishing trade, he has worked as an Associate Art Director for Drummer Magazine, and has worked as an illustrator and graphic designer for various publishers. A native San Franciscan, he is self-taught in watercolor and has been painting since childhood. He returned to entering his work in competition in 2003.
His main passions are teaching and painting.
His work can be found in Splash 9 & 10, and Watercolor Secrets all published by North Light Books.
Guy can also be found co-hosting an instructional Television show "Art 2 Art" along with Joyce Faulknor. Their TV show was awarded the West Coast Regional WAVE award in 2007 for their 1st show for best instructional TV show in their division.
