JOYCE FAULKNOR
I have been teaching art since 1991, I was the founder of Emerald Lake Art Academy, Redwood City CA. Finding a great combination in teaching as well as painting was my main focus. I began writing articles for the artist magazines as well as having my artwork published in "Splash 8" and "Splash 10" published by North Light Books. In 2003 I was approached by North Light to write an instructional book. As I began to write my book, I found the lessons flow out of me, I had so much to say after the years of teaching. In 2006 my book titled "Stunning Crystal and Glass" was published and on the book shelves of my local book. No bigger thrill than to walk in any bookstore and see my work on the shelves. In 2006 I also was invited to the UK to shoot a "how to" DVD which is the companion to "Stunning Crystal and Glass". In 2006 I partnered with Guy Magallanes, where we together created "Art 2 Art". We began filming Art 2 Art for public access television, our program received an award for "Best Instructional Program". Since then we shot three 60 minute episodes of Art 2 Art, never owning the copyright, we decided it was time to take on the responsibility of shooting our own program for PBS.
Over the past years of being a full time artist I have found that it is a constantly setting goals, obtaining the goals and learning how to keep reinventing yourself, as well as the many hats an artist must wear to keep your career alive and moving.
GUY MAGALLANES
Artist Statement
Influenced by my Grandmother, I paint images of landscapes and flowers, but with heightened exaggeration for drama’s sake from my Grandfathers’ influence. I paint images you probably pass by daily, but express how I see it, full of life, each image having a unique story to be shared. I am continually amazed at finding new techniques in watercolor trying to capture the energy I feel when first “finding” an image.
I grew up in the best creative environment a child could have and vividly remember watching the magic of creation unfolding around me at all times. My Grandmother indirectly gave me the gift of consistency, and to search for the surprises and regularity that each season brings. My Grandfather gave me the gift of innovation and wonderment, finding new uses for anything he came across. An avid storyteller, he made his adventures even more colorful each time they were retold. My family shared meals at a table where family history fed imagination and the soul and homemade meals were served to feed the senses and body.
