About this project
The passionate world of Argentine Tango is experiencing a transition as Paris redefines its boundaries through performance, instruction and social dance events. I will take you into this world with my photography and explore the intense social dynamic that makes Argentine Tango such an amazing experience.
I will to travel to Paris to complete a week of shooting between September 4th and September 11th to work work with the tango community to complete both planned location shoots during the day and facilitate documentary-style shooting during evening social dances called Milongas. I will be coordinating the shoots by tango professionals whom I worked with when I was living in the Pacific Northwest. I will also be working with many new dancers whom I have not yet met in person.
Upon my return to the United States I will edit and prepare the images for inclusion in a self-published coffee table book during September and October. The book will be published in November if all goes well. I will also print images for gallery exhibition. And this is where I need your help…
If this project is funded I do not intend to charge any dancers for photography regardless of how they may use the images when we are done. Doing so would limit my pool of subjects to those with cash to burn. I do not want to exclude those without financial means because doing so ignores the accessibility and broad appeal of Argentine Tango. In fact, my intent is to allow each subject to use the finished images for their own self-promotion, professional development, or simply for sharing with friends through email or social networks. This means that I need your help to fund this project, to help keep it "real" as they say.
If you love dance. If you love Paris. If you love tango.. you can support this project by contributing today! I need an estimated $2,750 to help with gear transport and insurance, flights and to help with the materials for making 20-30 exhibition quality prints. I am offering generous and fun rewards for contributors at all levels, so donate today! It's good for the soul.

Yes and no. I recently finished a self-published book of dance photography called Studio Sessions: Collaborations with Dancers. That project took over 2 years, shooting between paid jobs and on weekends. It also took place in the Pacific Northwest. This will be a much more intense project that happens in a much shorter period of time.

I get by with a little help from my friends. I'm working with a couple of great dancers in Paris who are helping me manage logistics and planning. They'll also be creative collaborators on the project and are already scouting locations around the city. Other than that? Luck, caffeine and a heck of a lot of hard work.

I'm very new to video capture, but I find it extremely interesting. I'll just say that I hope there will be video. I won't sacrifice still shooting to do it, but I'm pretty sure I can squeeze a bit in. Even if it's primarily experimental.

I spent 6 weeks in France on an Art Abroad in college. So... I'm rusty.
