Greetings and salutations!
Lest anyone begin fearing that I have run off and spent the Kickstarter funds in Las Vegas (I haven't, by the way), I felt that now would be a good time to post a quick update on what's happening on this side of the internet.
First and foremost, I find it fascinating that when you really, absolutely need to get something done within a set period of time, destiny has a way of dropping a variety of challenges in the schedule path for no other apparent reason than to simply test one's resolve. I mention this only because there have been unexpected challenges. But I have met each with a clear head and a heart full of determination. The show goes on!
So, how's the book coming along?
I still have a heavy workload ahead of me, but I intend on completing the first draft by the end of this month. If it passes review, it will be ready for download as a digital e-book by the 1st of July (at which point it will also go off to the printer).
The workload I have established goes in cycles:
- Tweak the story (done often to improve dialog or remove unnecessary clutter)
- Review/Edit storyboards to match the written draft
- Draw/Ink/Paint a sequence
- Scan the pages of the sequence
- Art cleanup (in Photoshop)
- Balloons & Lettering in Illustrator
- Review current work. Move on to next set
I'm sure that this system is better performed with a team, but I find that doing work like this on my own yields higher productivity when I can go through it in divided chunks, to take advantage of working in short bursts and stay focused.
Being an artist is just one facet of being able to create a great book. Although I am comfortable with my storytelling and art style talents, I openly admit to being surprised at how much work is needed to create proper lettering and speech bubbles. I've purchased a couple of pro comic fonts from Blambot, and am creating the bubbles in Illustrator, so it was just a matter of working out a technique that fills in the gaps without causing any delay. Creating a graphic novel requires many roles, and I am filling each of these completely on my own (slightly daunting)!
My primary goal is a duality of speed and quality. Not only do I want to get my work in your hands in a reasonable amount of time, but I want it to meet an almost absurdly high level of standards. This is my first book ever, so I want it to make a great impression.
Important information needed!
To the backers who will be receiving physical goods, please keep an eye on your email. I will be sending out a survey soon to get your mailing addresses for items such as artwork, prints, and promo items. These items will begin shipping in July, and without addresses I won't know where to send things.
Although I've already expressed my thanks, I cannot understate the level of gratitude I have for the opportunity to do this project. This work represents a stepping stone toward a lifetime career as an artist. Not just for this one book, but for the many other books and stories that I have not yet imagined.
"Derive happiness in oneself from a good day's work, from illuminating the fog that surrounds us."
-- Henri Matisse
