Anna Showers-Cruser will make a new body of work at Vermont Studio Center this winter. Help bring this project to life!
THE WHAT:
Vermont Studio Center has offered me, Anna S.-C., the invaluable opportunity of an artist residency in Johnson, VT. The program provides housing, meals, and studio space to 50 artists each month. While in residence, I will create twelve uniquely embroidered paintings on canvas, employing color and texture to evoke elements of human physicality.
THE WHY:
The goal for the Body Queeries Project, to be produced while in residence at VSC, is to create 12 unique works inspired by the lives of gender-queer and transgender youth. The hope is that this project will lead to an exhibition to benefit LGBT-identified homeless youth.*
* Funds raised on kickstarter will not go directly to any charity organization; rather, they will simply allow me the opportunity to create works!
<<My current art practice is an investigation into how we queer bodies--the ways we are quickest to define "Self" and "the Other." I am particularly interested in our framing of biological sex, sexual identity, and gender expression as presumed binary systems. Aesthetically, deepening this exploration means cultivating a variety of paints and textiles, materials chosen for their tactility.>> You can read more of my artist statement here.
THE HOW: With your help, of course! A typical residency month at VSC costs $4,000. I have been lucky enough to receive scholarship and artist grants to cover a significant portion of the residency fee for this intensive studio retreat. Through your generosity, I will able to surmount the remaining fees and material costs, and make this project possible!
Your contribution will simply allow me to pay the remainder of the residency fees. Any additional funds will go toward transportation to and from Vermont, material costs, and shipping of artworks. The works created at VSC will be posted on my website, and works in progress will be on tumblr in January 2013, and made available for sale at a later date.

My passion is flowing, but my pockets are empty! Inspired to create work honoring the presence of "queer" bodies, I aim to partner (after completing the work at VSC!) with an organization that does major, major good for young folks who have been cast from their homes due to identifying as LGBTQ, including gender-variant. I'd love to have my paintings on the walls of a place like the Ali Forney Center or True Colors Residence. I'm currently reaching out to these centers to brainstorm workshops or art classes, any way to move beyond the simple paintings-on-white-walls venue where my work is usually shown. The VSC residency will simply allow me to create the works I want to show in this kind of venue down the road.
