Update #4: Iceland video online now!

Posted on August 24, 2011

Hello everyone!

Hopefully by now everyone has gotten their rewards in the mail - if not, there may have been a mix-up in the mail...let me know and I will look into that!

I just wanted to update you all! The video that I shot while in Iceland, "How to Explain Unequal Exchange to Live Sheep," premiered at my two-person exhibition with Yana Dimitrova at Flux Factory in Queens, NYC. It is now online! You can view it here.

Thank you thank you thank you again to all of you for making this possible!

Update #3: My residency! Your rewards!

Posted on July 5, 2011

Hey everyone!

Thanks again for your contribution toward my residency in Iceland.  I had a truly eye-opening experience living on a farm outside the remote village of Laugarvatn. (If I haven't spoken to you yet, you may not know that I just spent 30 days living primarily with 50 or so sheep.)  In addition to taking advantage of the quiet atmosphere and the inspirational landscape, I became immersed in Icelandic culture and had the opportunity to meet scholars, artists, farmers, school teachers, tour guides, journalists, architects, writers, politicians, and more.  I also got to work on a new video project (which I need to finish editing) and an installation project - which will hopefully be ready for my two person exhibition with Yana Dimitrova entitled Cheap Paradise of Familiar Tasks and Places which will be opening on Friday, August 19th at Flux Factory in New York City.

After my residency ended, I spent my last 5 days in Iceland traveling the Ring Road, which was one of the most amazing experiences of my life so far!  Iceland has such an interesting, varied landscape and so few people...the experience was surreal.  I swam in natural hot springs and climbed mountains....and swam in hot springs on mountains. I saw geysers, many many waterfalls, lava fields, bubbling mud pits, neon blue lagoons, seals, beaches, rainbows, glaciers, and a lot of sheep. And I wouldn't have been able to experience any of this without the support of friends, family, and arts enthusiasts like yourself.

Your rewards should be arriving mid-late next week!  Some of you New York City and Troy, New York residents may be getting yours hand-delivered.  Look for an email from me regarding the status of your incoming Angela Washko treasures.

THANKS AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN!!!!!! <3

Through an interdisciplinary practice spanning performance, video, and installation, Angela Washko investigates the effects of consumerism and materialism in creating the foundations of American lifestyle. In her most recent works, Washko satirically utilizes imagery reminiscent of the French Rococo to question the era’s notion of beauty achieved through the excessive accumulation of frivolous objects and draws parallels to contemporary American society’s limited depiction of women and sex-driven marketing tactics. A backlash against planned obsolescence, her film sets and installations are constructed with items recovered from dumpsters and Dollar-Store materials marketed as disposable.

Washko is a current artist-in-residence at Flux Factory and has recently completed residencies at The Contemporary Artists Center at Woodside, and The Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally including most recently The Rotterdam International Film Festival, Carnival of e-Creativity in New Dehli, Videopolis in Barcelona, The New Media Festival in Cologne, The Self Destructing Art Show at Flux Factory, and The Budapest Short Film Festival. Additionally, Washko currently holds the position of Residency Coordinator at Flux Factory.
