Adrenaline-packed game where you control a massive robot to smash human cities in 3D and fight off mankind. For iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch.
Godzilla Meets The Simpsons Meets Mechwarrior
Bigbot Smash City! (working title) is an action-packed game where you control a massive robot to smash human cities in 3D and fight off mankind for survival. Initially this would be a game for iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) devices.
Bigbot Smash City! hopes to combine the massive scale of a Godzilla, with the building smashing fun of arcade classic Rampage (except Bigbot would be fully in 3D), with the artistic and comedic quirkiness of The Simpsons/Futurama, and the customizability of Mechwarrior (where you can configure and upgrade your bot).
Where We're At Now
In under a week, I've developed a working and playable basic proof-of-concept app from a few conceptual sketches. Please see the demo video - it describes the concept much better than these mere words ever will. The proof-of-concept app currently only has basic models, very randomly generated cities made of 3D blocks, and simple human infantry soldiers that attack your bot, yet it demonstrates the basic gameplay and feel of the game well. The finished game would be much much more. Please read on...
What The Money Is For
As a independent software developer/contractor, I normally have to focus on clients' projects in order to pay the bills. If successfully funded, this Kickstarter project would allow me to be able to spend some time away from having to take on client projects, and instead focus on finishing Bigbot Smash City! and making it the awesome mayhem-filled masterpiece it is destined to be. Now you and your ideas can get to be a part of it.
Here are some of the features that will be created if the project reaches the funding goal:
Level designs based on real human cities from around the world: Backers will get to vote on what those cities will be, with 1 vote for each dollar pledged. Want to smash your obscure little hometown with a massive robot? Then pledge a good sized amount, and vote for it (and get all your friends to pledge and vote for it). The more money pledged, the more levels I will have time to create. They will be generally based on the Google Map for the city, with special points of interest (such as your house, which might contain an underground bunker for parts that might unlock special bot upgrades). At the minimum funding threshold, there will be 15 real cities/levels of increasing challenge level. Any pledge of $500+ will guarantee that your city of choice is included.
Random City Generator: For additional gameplay value and playability, a random city generator will create realistic cities to allow you to keep playing long after you've finished smashing the cities in the designed levels of the main campaign.
Multiple bot types with different features and upgrades: There are currently three basic bot types planned, and more will be added depending on the amount of funding received. Each basic bot type will have a number of upgrades for capabilities, weapons, armor. The more funding received, the more upgrade options I can create.
Stomp the Humans: The humans, in their unending numbers, will stop at nothing to destroy your bot. From city police officers to military tanks to aircraft carriers, there will be a range of foes to squash, and incinerate. More funding means more interesting, varied, and challenging foes to fight.
Multiple play modes: Play in World Domination Mode as your bot travels from city to city across the world in order to squash the human menace and gather components for upgrades. Or play in Survival Mode as waves and waves of humans come in ever increasing numbers to try to defeat your bot. Or for the competitive, compete against computer-controlled bots in Speed Demolition Mode to cause the most damage to a city in a limited amount of time.
Multiplayer Mode: If the total funding exceeds $9000 by the funding end date, I will be able to add a Multiplayer Mode where multiple player-controlled bots can play in any of the three modes together at an increased challenge level.
How You Can Help
Word! First of all, help get the word out so that people at least know about it. Even if you don't have an iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch (yet), but like big robots and building demolition, please "tweet" this project using Twitter, or "Like" this project on Facebook using the buttons right below the movie above, or share it everywhere using this link: http://kck.st/ju2dRX
Support! Every dollar, yen, euro, or gold piece counts! More funding = more fun features. But if we don't hit the funding goal, there might be no features. Team together with a few other residents from your hometown to put in a big pledge and get your hometown as a level in the game.
Encouragement and Feedback! It's not easy being an indie game developer - every project is a risk that might leave us unable to pay the rent. Some days, we wonder whether to give up the dream of creating our own awesome apps, and just go back to a stable but boring salaried job. But encouragement goes a heck of a long way, and is the fuel we run on when instant noodles and Mountain Dew just don't cut it anymore. So even if you can't afford to make a pledge, but want to lend moral support, then simply post an encouraging comment on the wall, or share some ideas and feedback on what would make the game really awesome to play. Help support indie games!
Requirements to run the game: at least iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, iPad 2, or iPod Touch 3rd or 4th gen device required to play. iOS version 4.2 and higher will be required on the device.
3D Engine: Cocos 3D - a new open source engine that is free and easy for me to customize to my heart's content. None of the funding is wasted towards licensing expensive game engines. The 3D models for robots, buildings, and foes would be created either programmatically (as was the case for everything in the proof-of-concept), or using Blender (a free open-source 3D content creation suite), and Google Sketchup, a great tool for building 3D buildings.
Controls: The controls would take advantage of the mobile device and use the built-in accelerometer and touch screens fully, as opposed to using awkward onscreen joysticks like many of the games out there. Tilt/rotate the device to walk and rotate the camera angle. Tap on targets to attack. Tapping on nearby targets would allow your bot to smash/stomp them to cause massive melee destruction, while tapping at farther targets would trigger your bot's ranged weapon such as a death ray or missile to blast a target from a distance. Tap and hold down the bot to jump. The higher the bot jumps, the larger the impact shockwave radius when it lands, potentially demolishing whole screenfuls of buildings and splattering all humans on the ground nearby.
Thank you for taking a look at the project.
